My Life: Michele Aserman

In our society, there is a lack of recognition as to the importance of teachers. They are the people who mold generation after generation, providing them with what’s needed to excel in life. This begins all the way when we learn the alphabet, which brings me to Michele Aserman. She is a nursery school teacher who teaches children the alphabet. I have seen her teach, and been taught by her back when the only words out of my mouth were single syllables. She has instilled morals and values in me, that I probably wouldn't have had otherwise. I have no doubt that in this way she leads many children as they grow up into being better people. She does this by following trends in teaching and as such the school now uses iPads in their children's learning. Her power comes not only from her position but also from how much she cares about the education and lives of those she teaches. Thebe Rodney Medupe is a leader within this field for multiple reasons. When he was young, his family did everything they could to send him from his poor village to a modern high school. Once there maths and science held his imagination. Thebe built a rather crude telescope when he was 13 in order to look at the craters and hills of the moon. At 17 he went on a trip to England, thanks to winning a Science Olympiad, to visit various scientific facilities. This furthered his interest in science. Later, he received a scholarship to the University of Cape Town where got his doctorate in astrophysics. He got his doctorate in astronomy from the same university later. This is just the basics of his background., One of his main achievements is a documentary called Cosmic Africa about two tribes and their use of the stars and astronomy. This was to get more people interested in astronomy, specifically black South Africans. He continuously tries to get more black South Africans interested in astronomy in a similar manner to himself.

These things, as well as being a lecturer at the very University he got both of his doctorates from, empowers him to change lives by giving them opportunities they didn't even know they had. He inspires me to pursue this field and help increase interest within it. His commitment to furthering those South Africans education is more than
