Mental Health Awareness Panel
I participated in the Mental Health Awareness Panel on Wednesday the 16th here at Bemidji State University (BSU). The Mental Awareness Panel was a great experience. There was an LPN-psychiatric nurse who shared her son’s story and four students also shared their stories about surviving multiple suicide attempts. The psychiatric nurse lost her eighteen-year-old son from suicide right before his prom. The mother stated that her son was humble, easy to get along with, everybody wanted to be around, and played baseball for his school. Before committing suicide, the son reached out to two of his best friends. The two best friends helped him through tough times and kept it secret, but he end up committing suicide. This student was bullied by students and teachers in middle school and was called “attention seeking” because the student would not get close to people and was always alone. High school was better than middle school, the student stated: “I got to play sports.” The student had great skills, which her coach praised her for, but ended up getting kicked out of sports because she did not have the social skills. Later in high school, the student got to the point where she was even afraid of her own shadow, always thinking people are talking about her and out to get her, so the student was terrified by people. The student would not get out of bed, shower, and would not go to school. She was always late to school, skipped classes, and almost did not graduate. Freshman year in college was even worse for the student, she got into an abusive relationship, which made the student’s self esteem go down even more. The student end up in the emergency room for suicidal attempt and was on suicidal watch. The student stated, “I did not know what to do or how to give up.” The student got help and is doing well with
