My time here at Iowa State University has been great! The aspects that make it great are embedded in the values that Iowa State represents. The Memorial Union has shaped my experience at Iowa State in many ways. This is where I eat lunch everyday, meet friends, and occasionally listen to a mind stimulating lecture. When I first came to Iowa State, I was very oblivious to the fact that maybe a building could influence my experience. I was wrong. The Memorial Union has always focused on developing the students into leaders. The mission statement of Iowa State University is to create, share, and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the world a better place. It’s a place where you could eat breakfast or lunch while watching a screen and talking to friends about current events, how our classes were going, and grades. My favorite thing to eat is the chicken strips with chips, a cookie, and occasionally ice cream. The Food Court contributes to what makes the Memorial Union stand up to its values. The lecture series is the place where intellectuals, famous activist, and lecturers go to speak. Great speakers like Ta-nehisi Coates (The Atlantic Magazine writer), Ali Velshi (MSNBC political commentator), Harriet Washington (Harvard professor in medicine), and Senator Klobuchar (United States Senator from Minnesota) have all given lectures that have blown my mind. This helps expand my knowledge and creativity. This applies to everyone, not just myself. What Iowa State does is provide equal opportunity for all people to learn which is very special to me and represents the mission statement. One person may be into politics, the other science, and the other music, no matter what our differences are we can rely on the lecture series to provide a lecture that fits our ideological
The crowd moves quietly to the seats. The area is silent except with the click of the guard’s shoes. The relief commander walks out and announces The Changing of the Guard ceremony is about to commence; as he is talking, a new guard walks out ready to take the place of the guard on duty. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier contains three men: a testament to all of the unknown fallen soldiers. The tomb continues to honor these soldiers through the ceremonies and symbolism behind the guards’ movements.

When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
The author of this website, which would be the National Council on Public History, is specifically looking at what exactly is public history and what exactly is meant by public history. Public History can be defined as history in the field. It is the use of history in real life situations. It is history applied and goes outside the realm of academic history. The author does mention that while there used to be clear definitions between public and academic history with public history being more multi-disciplinary, history as an academic subject has also increasingly become multi-disciplinary. Public historians have many different names such as archivists, museum professionals, and local historians. The author’s main argument surrounding these definitions of public history is that there are different forms of history with public history being the kind that the average person sees. Public historians can deeply impact their local communities and many collaborate with local community members on projects to ensure that the history they’re detailing is that of the community who is affected by it. The author does note that while many public history projects can be educational, the purpose might be more for an intellectual history like for a business’s archives. Public history projects could also be used to promote the local town or for the town’s own economic development.
The Freedmen’s Bureau, also known as The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, was created in the South after the Civil War in 1865 by Congress with the intention of providing assistance to the less fortunate whites and newly freedmen. Congress had decided that the organization would operate for one year after the end of the Civil War. In 1866, Congress passed a bill which stated that the Bureau continue to function as a peace cooperation for longer than one year, increasing its powers throughout the South. Major General Oliver Otis Howard was the head of the Bureau from 1865 to 1872 under the regulated War Department; he converted from a soldier in the War to a believer in emancipation for all. Tragic events occur not only in the United States, but also all over the world. From these tragic events communities, families, and the government decide to place memorials for people that were lost and as a thank you for people protecting the citizens of the country. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Wall, in Washington D.C. is one of these cases. However, what exactly was the purpose of this memorial? The purpose of putting up the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was not only to thank the veterans for their bravery, but to remind future generations about happened during the Vietnam War. The first time I heard about The Cooper Union, I was a high school freshman in my Art Appreciation class. My teacher was discussing Cooper Union's reputation as an art school and showed us a painting one of her students who was accepted to this university. At first I wanted to attend Cooper Union as an art student but as the years passed by, I realized I would be happier if I could combine my creativity with science and math to make contributions to society through engineering.
Originating on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 1918, the cessation of fighting at the end of World War I would come to be known as Veterans Day. This hallowed day, was thought to be the end to wars, and was reflected upon by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 as representative of the solemn pride to honor those who died in service of their country. The United States of America has a long history of trying to provide support and benefits for the men (and recently women) who have fought for the country dating back to the Colonial War time in 1636. The Pilgrims passed a law saying the colony would care for the disabled soldiers who fought against Native Americans (U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, 2015b). During this time, it was customary for veterans to receive pensions for their service during war-time. This effort was made to prevent desertions and to encourage more men to enlist. The Vietnam War is one of the most controversial subjects in American politics. The US went to the war under the guise of the domino effect, as they believed that if Vietnam fell, the surrounding countries would fall as well. President Johnson said “If you let a bully come into your garden, the next day he’ll be on your porch, and the day after that he’ll rape your wife” One thing that is not controversial is that we lost the war. Lots of different factors contributed to the United States unsuccessful trip to Vietnam. Among many reasons, one of the two biggest factors in the lose of the war was America’s foreign policy how and how bad the US underestimated how important freedom and independence was to the people of Vietnam. On top of that the US used the wrong military strategy, instead of focusing on limiting collateral damage the US used heavy artillery that killed citizens and alienated would be supporters. There was political corruptness in South Vietnam governments, which meant that they could not build an alternative to the NLF. At home, the public opinion of the war was decreasing at a constant rate and demonstrations were at an all time high. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong, and these problems all contributed to a Vietnam tour that went horribly wrong and an attitude among the American people that was growing ever doubt full of their government.
Some might say that it takes a lot of patience and experience to open up a new campus not knowing whether it will succeed or fail. Texas A&M San Antonio like many other colleges first inaugurated in 2011, expanding the A&M branch further South left a lot of people wondering what the outcome would be. At first it started off only offering upperclassman courses making it very rigorous for students who were interested in attending to apply straight out of high school. Then in the fall of 2016 TAMUSA opened up its doors to the very first freshman class. This event was bound to create the beginning of a new chapter for a lot more students giving them the opportunity to be first generation college students. It impacted plenty of people, including me, to make history and be the first to start new traditions at this particular school.
