Meditation is systematized in many religions of the world in some form or other. It is in existence since old times. It is believed by many that Socrates practices meditation. So did the Neo-Platonist philosopher, Plotinus. But meditation as a technique for higher control over the mind and body is not known to have survived during the middle ages. Its revival is much more of a recent history.

In the Hindu religious system, they stress on meditation as a purifier of the mind and soul. For example ‘Yoga’ which is an inalienable part of the Hindu philosophical school lays an elaborate process for purification of body, mind and soul. One aspect of Yoga is “Dhyana” which means concentrated meditation. Buddha made it the means to achieve the process of Nirvana. In many religions, spiritual purification is sought to be achieved by mental repetition of a few sacred syllables. The power of the word ‘OM’ is known to many who chant it in their prayers. Another contemplative practice is focusing attention on some image like flower.

The power is in the mind, but not in a mind which is ever ruffled and flustered by adversities and difficulties. Rolling stone gathers no moss; immobile stone gathers moss. Only a calm and quiet mind can have higher power, higher density of the gray-matter which is the source of mental power. Meditation helps to remain poised and calm. When we meditate our spirit is in link with nature, and the ‘calm of nature’ flows through us.
Meditation is a unique process that helps us understand how our mind works. When we understand how your mind works, then we can begin to make purposeful alteration in our life to improve it. Meditation also improves our ability to objectively analyze our emotions, mental states, thought process and responses to events that occur around
