When someone brings up the topic about the Mayans, most people would imagine massive temples, where sacrifices would be made to Mayan gods. Most people would call them strange, but what most people don’t know is that the Mayans were excellent doctors. Mayans were great doctors and they used a mix of both religion and science to find cures for illnesses, and some of their methods are used in modern medicine. The Mayans would use prayer as medicine just as much as plants. They were experts in plants and provided many cures from plants. Many of the healers have a firm belief of their religion and would use their belief to cure illnesses. The Mayan used various different types of religious cures, for example pray, meditations, and sacrifices. One strange thing about the Mayans was that they considered their religion and science the same thing when healing someone. This hindered the growth of science in their society. Although, religion and science were considered the same thing to the Mayans when curing an illness, I believe that the when the Mayans used science instead of religion to find cure, it was much more effective.
Mayan healers had a lot of social power in Mayan society. They were often priests or followers who were very connected with the Mayan religion. They had a vast knowledge of plants and their uses. Mayan healers would use their knowledge of plants to find hallucinogens. Hallucinogens were an important aspect of the Mayan religion. The Mayans believed that using plants that provided hallucinogen effects could provide a way to get closer to the gods or the spiritual world. They believed that religion and science were equal. These principles were important when finding a cure but there were religious cures that healers would use. Their most common religious cure is prayer. Most religions preach that prayer has power and is a way to talk to God. The Mayans believe that prayer could cure any illness, as long as the gods were willing to cure the illness. Along with prayer, Mayans would try to please the gods. They would please them by offering sacrifices. The Mayans believed that if the gods were happy then the gods would be more accepting when answering the Mayans prayers. They would also use sorcery in order to get in touch with the spiritual world. Mayan healers believed that the spiritual world held the cure to any sickness.
