The Gospel of Matthew introduces Jesus as the Messiah and the savior of the world. Matthew elaborates on Christ’s linage from birth to Mary, his death and the Cross. All these significant events surrounding the birth, life and death of Christ were recorded by Matthew. The stories in the Gospel of Matthew focus on the life of Jesus, particularly on his sermons and preaching’s. Matthew emphasizes on five major lessons given by Jesus throughout the Gospel. This includes discipleship, humility, brotherhood, hypocrisy, and ethical conduct. However, some scholars believed that Matthew was not completely responsible for the writings. In fact, scholars believed Matthew was greatly influenced, based on Mark. Although there were a lot of similarities, there were also differences in comparison to the two Gospels. Jesus threatens his people by mentioning the “hell of fire.” As far as punishment goes, his followers should not contribute to these following acts of sins: failing to forgive, committing adultery, divorce, and swearing falsely. In order to go to the “Kingdom of Heaven,” one must be obedient to the prayers, fasting and conduct of God. Matthew basically is trying to let the readers know that eternal life with God or Hell depends on their actions. Matthew mentions the Ten Commandments, which leads to the path of righteousness. In order to go to the kingdom of heaven, the people must follow the Jewish Law. In Matthew 19:21, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to[the] poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” This is an example of how he exhorts his followers by promising them to the gates of heaven. No one knows for sure what happens when you die, your possession and materialistic things are useless, once you are gone.
