Unity and Diversity in Matthew and Luke

Matthew and luke paint a unique portrait of jesus christ. Each provides special insight into who he is and what he accomplished. They exhibit unity, by bearing witness to the same jesus and diversity, by viewing him from multiple varied perspectives. The originality of the text is also derived through the book Mark and the “Q source.” So because of Mark and the Q source the different views with which Matthew and Luke approach their narratives differ and influence the ways they talk about the perception of Jesus in God’s personality and the story of Christ’s birth.

Luke was a very perceptive man and viewed Jesus as one who brings salvation to all nations and people groups, no matter what religious background. He used Jesus’s miracles to reveal His identity as the power of God.(Strauss, 2011) Luke 11:20 really depicts the use of God’s power and miraculous work; “But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” Also Luke is known as the gospel of the saviour of all people and is the most thematic of the four gospels.(Strauss, 2011) Alongside themes of God’s love for the lost, the role of the spirit, and jerusalem’s role in God’s plan you see a central theme of salvation for all people as talked about earlier. Salvation in Luke is different than the salvation involved in Matthew. Matthew says that “God will give his children good gifts while Luke states that the heavenly father will give the holy spirit to those who ask him.”(Burridge, 1994) The different ideas coexisting in both books reveals the massive personality that is God. Furthermore, Matthew focuses on Jesus as the jewish messiah and the fulfillment of old testament hopes. The odd thing is he focuses a lot on the past and the future as he awaits for the fulfillment of promises as well as “the son of man to come in final judgement.”(Skinner & Iverson, 2012) While dwelling on the past and future, what sets Matthew apart is that this particular gospel is the most structured of the four gospels and is crafted around five carefully ordered teaching sections.(Strauss, 2011) Also particular words or phrases are changed by Matthew and Luke to make them more acceptable to their readers and less theologically offensive.
