Materialism and greed have plagued humans for millennia. It has infected many, changing how they view the world, themselves, and others. It takes powerful events to knock the greed out of them. Greed makes people unhappy with the world and leaves them always wanting more.Overall, greed is a bad thing and can make people lose sight of what is important. There are a few examples of greed in the three stories: “The Golden Touch”, “The Necklace”, and “Civil Peace”. The story “The Golden Touch” tells of a king named Midas who had become more and more obsessed with gold as time went on. Eventually, he almost loved gold more than his daughter. This immediately shows how greed can corrupt one’s thoughts and always leave one wanting more. Midas could never have enough gold. After the stranger gave him “the Golden Touch” ability, he started turning everything around him into gold, erasing their natural beauty. …show more content…

In the story “The Necklace”, Mathilde could only think about how her life is not as glamorous as the richer friends she had. She was not that far behind them in social class but she acted as if she was the poorest woman ever. Always wanting more than she had was showing her greed. Even when her husband helped her time and time again, she only wanted to be wealthier to fit in with the others, and did not pay attention to his love. She was overcome with a want she could not have unless she worked for it, which she did not do. After she lost the borrowed necklace, she realized she could work to pay for something, even if it was debt. Just like in “The Golden Touch” this traumatic event caused them to realize wealth does not equal happiness, friends, family, and life can make them happy. When Mathilde finally caught up with her rich friend again and found out the necklace was fake, Mathilde realized mass wealth and beauty are not necessarily tied and you do not need wealth to be higher on the social
