Being a teacher is a life changing the experience? It’s a great opportunity for you to teach your students all the knowledge you can think of to create a bright future for our little ones. The school that I visited was Santa Maria Elementary, and I interview Mrs. Maria Juanita Lozano, she is Special Education Teacher – PPCD for almost 32 years of experience. Mrs. Lozano loves being with his/her students. These are some things that Mrs. Lozano shared in the interview. What is important in education today? She answered that one main concern of all teachers today is providing each of their students with the best educational program. Starting with discipline so that they can use it in their everyday life. Next, the question that I ask Mrs. Lozano was wanted are the characteristics of a professional teacher. She stated many characteristics of a professional teacher is too respectful to one another, organized and plans, keep informed and updated, open for suggestion, flexible. Another question that was asked was what were some experiences that they have had while teaching. She answered this, two students are alike regardless of the classroom setting they are in. Their learning styles are different as are their needs, and it’s our job considers this when we plan our lessons. It takes a team effort to run and efficient classroom. One of the most important skills that are necessary to be an outstanding teacher is getting to know the whole child/student in your classroom. It's vital that every student feels valued and a sense of belonging in the classroom and that comes from a teacher that is kind, encouraging, caring, respectful and passionate about learning and teaching. Focusing on the Kindergarten grade level, teachers are trained to mainly facilitate student learning through play. Lecture style teaching is not the most effective teaching style at this age since children’s attention spans are extremely short. The idea of students learning through play is to help the student maintain longer attention spans in order to promote better learning.
Before diving into my research, I reflected on the knowledge I already knew regarding play and play based learning. From experience, I know that play is an enjoyable activity for children, and even some adults. I know that there are different ways one can play. For example, playing with others is known as cooperative play and playing alone is considered solitary play. There are different types of play. For example, there is dress up or pretend games, which is considered dramatic, play and there is playing with building blocks which is constructive play. After my reflection I realized that I was more knowledgeable on the action of playing rather then the benefits of it.
In Kindergarten school, some parent believes play is the best way for young children to learn the conceptions, skills, and set a solid foundation for later school and life success. In the other hand, many parents disagree and believe play is a waste of time, messy, noisy, and uneducationall. I believe play is not waste of time, but it something worth to fight for, in this presentation I would show parent the main importance of some of the numerous kinds of play, and why play is a fundamental basis for improving children’s ability to succeed in school and life.
Teaching is important to me because I believe in the true value of self and group improvement. Life is an uphill challenge to better yourself and the environment in which you live. With improvement in mind, who could be more important than the teachers who construct and facilitate that improvement? The special area of improvement that I focus on is physical education. Physical education is crucial in the development of an individual who wishes to live a long healthy, and prosperous life. Physical education shapes the mind and body through social interaction, physical activity, real world experiences, and most importantly the opportunity to challenge yourself and test your own limits.
My cooperating teacher has been employed in the field of education for 19 plus years. She has been in her current position as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at the Lighthouse Learning Center for 12 years. Observing a teacher who has so many years of experience in the classroom is very beneficial. Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves.
