The Marxist Literary Theory
“The history of all hithero existing society is the history of class struggles”, quoted by the notorious Karl Marx, scratches the surface of the ideology of Marxism. The Marxist theory juxtaposes binaries of the social classes known as the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, which can theoretically be found in literature. Many short stories contain aspects that convey social class distinctions by showing how they interact and rely on each other through economical means, such as the short stories “Everyday Use” and “Battle Royal”. These stories show the lives of the upper class and the lower class and how they coincide with each other in the social sphere. With society having such distinct binaries in literature, it gives voice to those who can’t speak out and appreciation to those who hold higher stance. These two stories show the lives of individuals who can’t speak out and hold lower class positions, as the proletariat. This paper will parallel the aspects of Marxism and how it is portrayed through literature.
Marxism focuses on how the society is broken into two parts: the base pertaining to production of the economy and the superstructure, which includes the all other parts of society- state, education, religion, and culture. The base and superstructure directly correspond with each other through power, capital, and ruling class ideology. With symbolized Marxism in literature, it shows the author’s analysis between class distinctions and class conflict. Many stories have binaries that signify distinctions in social classes such as the lord and serf and patrician and plebian. The Marxist literary theory allows all components of the world speak for themselves and it shows the natural, intertwining cycle of the economy. “Battle Royal” was a great example of the “organic” voice. The narrator delivered a message that instilled deep emotion about the life of a disadvantaged, intellectual African-American who belonged to the upper class, which was dominated by the whites. “Everyday Use” gave a depiction of what a low class family looks and lives like compared to a more successful, well off individual. Karl Marx’s theory of society having two parts is commonly relative in most literature because society will always have the rich and poor, even if it’s seen in different light. Marxism can give individuals appreciation and a voice, just by having two reflective binaries.
In the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx, with the help of Friedrich Engel, advocated for the violent overthrow of capitalism and the creation of a socialist society. According to Marx, “The history of hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles” (184). Notably, Marx and Engel were the main proponents of communism. Marx’s main argument was that the society is the product of class conflict that results in different social classes with opposing economic interests. Importantly, Marx believed that the society comprised the oppressor and the oppressed, and the two are in constant conflict with each other. The ensuing conflict results in the revolutionary reorganization of the society, or the ruin of the opposing classes. Therefore, Marx, like Kant, saw the institutions of a given society as influential in determining its future. However, Marx argued that traditional institutions were unsuitable for a free and just society that respected human dignity. For example, he saw the modern bourgeoisie society as a product of the “ruins of feudal society,” meaning that the modern society is yet to resolve class antagonisms (184). Indeed, he sees the modern-day social classes as the products of the serfs and burgesses of the middle ages. In this regard, he claimed that the modern social structures are the products of a sequence of revolutions in the systems of production, as well as exchange. However, modern social structures are yet to enhance equity in the society. Therefore, Marx advocated for a revolution that would change the existing social structures and prepare the society to adopt communism. Unlike Kant’s idea of freedom of speech, which is a mind influencing process, Marx seemed more violent by the stating that “let the ruling classes tremble at a communistic revolution”
Marxism is a method of analysis based around the concepts developed by the two German philosophers Karl Marx and Fredrich Engel, centered around the complexities of social-relations and a class-based society. Together, they collaborated their theories to produce such works as The German Ideology (1846) and The Communist Manifesto (1848), and developed the terms ‘’proletariat’ and ’bourgeois’ to describe the working-class and the wealthy, segmenting the difference between their respective social classes. As a result of the apparent differences, Marxism states that proletariats and bourgeoisie are in constant class struggle, working against each other to amount in a gain for themselves.
When Adolf Hitler was put in as Chancellor in 1933, he started to begin the program of the NSDAP, the National Socialist German Labor Party. The highest priorities were to put all men back to work and to increase the birthrate. Both were accomplished by re-instituting the traditional roles of men and women. Within the next 10 years, most women were won over to National Socialism, content to do their part in the great national resurgence.

Imperialism and the hegemonic stability theory are used in different period of time which helps the countries to expand themselves. Firstly, let’s look at the neo-Marxist theories of imperialism. It refers to imperial government that is ruled by an emperor to earn and hold colonies and dependencies by extending the rules or authority of a nation over foreign countries. The key representatives of the theories of neo-Marxist on imperialism are Sweezy, Paul Baran, Andre Gunder Frank and Amin. Sweezy states that imperialism is a stage in the development of world economy. (Baran, Paul, and Paul Sweezy, 1968)He pointed out that there are several reasons such as the dominant form of capital is the monopoly capital and the rivalry in the world market had led to cutthroat competition and international monopoly combines. For Baran, he thinks that there is a clear connection between monopoly capitalism and imperialism. (Baran, Paul, and Paul Sweezy, 1968) Imperialism is an integral portion of the political and economic order of capitalism, it is unavoidable characteristic of a system of international domination and global capitalism. The control of imperialist powers over undeveloped nations means that there is a lack of industrialization and the stagnation of the economies of the undeveloped countries which is leaded by the advanced capitalist countries.
Inspired by the works of Karl Marx, V.I. Lenin nonetheless drew his ideology from many other great 19th century philosophers. However, Marx’s “Communist Manifesto” was immensely important to the success of Russia under Leninist rule as it started a new era in history. Viewed as taboo in a capitalist society, Karl Marx started a movement that would permanently change the history of the entire world. Also, around this time, the Populist promoted a doctrine of social and economic equality, although weak in its ideology and method, overall. Lenin was also inspired by the anarchists who sought revolution as an ultimate means to the end of old regimes, in the hope of a new, better society. To his core, a revolutionary, V.I. Lenin was driven to evoke the class struggle that would ultimately transform Russia into a Socialist powerhouse. Through following primarily in the footsteps of Karl Marx, Lenin was to a lesser extent inspired by the Populists, the Anarchists, and the Social Democrats.

The first section of the Communist Manifesto describes the history of all society as the history of class conflicts. Claiming, that every society is essentially divided into, the oppressors and the oppressed. Furthermore, Marx adds, in the past, societies were organized in more complex combinations and hierarchies, but modern society is being split into two ‘hostile camps’. There has always been a continuous conflict between the different classes; the end result of these conflicts is always, either the total suppression of the oppressed classes, or a revolution, which leads to an overhaul of society. Marxism is summed up in the Encarta Reference Library as “a theory in which class struggle is a central element in the analysis of social change in Western societies.” In contrast the Encarta Reference Library defines capitalism as “an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods, characterized by a free competitive market and motivation by profit.” Marxism is the system of socialism of which the dominant feature is public ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange.

Revolution is a topic at the heart of the Socialist and Marxist Ideology. The processes that bring about the insurrection vary, but for Marx and Engels, the only viable coup d’état is a violent one, that will enable a transition to the best society and human life. In Marxism, revolution is inevitable because of precedents set by developmental historicism and then inequality rampant in society. These negative and traditional attributes give rise to class-consciousness in a manner that promotes the inexorable path of society from capitalism to socialism.
Karl Marx sought to understand how our capitalist society works, by concentrating on the social and economic relations in which people earn their living. Marx established that the capitalist system forces people into two classes; the bourgeoisie (the upper- class capitalists who own the means of production), and the proletariat (the working class). Marx’s analysis, otherwise known as “Marxism” is focused on developing the relations between these two classes. According to his theory, Marx believed that the law does not treat the two classes equally, supports the unequal treatment, and ignores the substantive inequalities between both. Marx is not concerned with the ideas of individual workers, but about their position in society. He sought to explain how the law operates as a means of repression, while promoting the interests of certain classes, most likely the bourgeoisie, at the expense of the rest of society, the proletariat.
Karl Marx analyzed class relations and social conflict using materialist interpretation of historical development and eventually creating a communist class, in hope of providing everyone with the same necessities. Marx argued that the capitalist bourgeoisie mercilessly exploited the proletariat class. He realized that the performance carried out by the proletariats created considerable abundance for the capitalist. Marxism focuses on exterminating the bourgeoisie and supplying the people with balanced amounts of funds ultimately creating the proletariat class efficient for everyone.
