Pot, weed, Mary Jane, reefer, herb, grass, bud, Kush, and dope are all nicknames for the addictive drug marijuana. Marijuana is a greenish-brown grey mixture of dried-out leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of Cannabis sativa. The most famous way to consume marijuana is through inhalation (smoking). Methods for smoking marijuana include hand-rolled cigarettes (joints), hand-rolled cigars (blunts), water pipes (bongs), and “vaping” (the use of raw cannabis or THC oil in a vaporizer) just to name a few. Marijuana can also be consumed by ingestion of different foods that are mixed with the drug. The term used for those foods are edibles. The most famous edibles are brownies, cookies, and candy. It is proven that the use of marijuana causes a human to produce chronic bronchitis and other serious breathing problems. Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes when the lungs have produced ample amounts of mucus caused by long periods of exposure to smoke. The use of this drug also decreases blood pressure and increases heart rates. A decrease in normal blood pressure can cause a person to experience symptoms such as dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea and sometimes may even cause a person to faint. An increase in heart rate puts a person at greater risk for heart attack. A person under the intoxication of marijuana is also affected by impaired body movements and memories. They tend to walk and talk slower than they would if they weren't “high.” Higher doses of this drug can cause one to experience hallucinations, delusions and psychosis. “Colorado earned more than $200 million in marijuana sales taxes, and Washington earned about $256 million” (Lee). The increase in tax revenue caused by the legalization of marijuana can be a good thing because it can give the government more money to spend on bettering communities. The extra money can be used to improve school by being able to purchase new technology for students to learn better. It can also be used to fix roads and hire more law enforcement officers. “Hospitalization rates for opioid painkiller dependence and abuse dropped on average 23 percent in states after marijuana was permitted for medicinal purposes, the analysis found. Hospitalization rates for opioid overdoses dropped 13 percent on average” (MSNBC). Many Americans suffer with chronic pain. For the pain, doctors prescribe opiates. This causes an increase in opioids deaths because people tent to misuse the drugs because of pain purposes. Extra money would definitely be beneficial to communities around the world but there is a bigger picture than just the money it would bring in. What is more important? Children having new technology to use at school or the fact that children will be influenced to think it’s okay to be a “pothead” because everyone around them is? It is human nature for us as humans to conform to the way of life that is the socially acceptable.
