Mary is a client at Maria Sardinas Wellness Recovery Center (MSWRC) an outpatient clinic. MSWRC provides individual and group therapy for those that are diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Clients are seen in individual therapy for up to six sessions then transferred to group therapy. All clients are required to see the psychiatrist and clinician at least once a month. Those that are stable in their symptoms will be considered for group therapy. Clients who have suicidal and homicidal thoughts with a plan are required to see their individual clinician weekly. Mary was given the diagnosis of bipolar Disorder 1, depressive, with psychotic features with initial onset of symptoms at age 27 by history. Currently she is meeting characteristics
From reading and reflecting her personal experience and journey with her sister, Pamela, I acquired a personal outlook of the deteriorating effects of mental illness as a whole, discovering how one individual’s symptoms could significantly impact others such as family and friends. From this new perspective mental health counseling provides a dominate field within not only individuals who may suffer mental illness such as Pamela, but also serve as a breaking point for family and friends who also travel through the illness, such as Carolyn.

Bipolar Disorder can be classified by the occurrence of manic episodes followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes. A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, extensive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy, lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, nearly every day. During the specific period of mood disturbance and increased energy or activity, many symptoms are present. Some examples of these symptoms can include: -Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, and are more talkative than usual (“Bipolar and Related Disorders, “n.d.). 1. I learned that Horizon Health Services is a non-for-profit facility that provides mental health counseling as well as rehabilitation for addiction. This organization has a variety of locations in Buffalo and also has a detox center downtown. The detox center has medical monitoring while individuals are going through withdrawal symptoms of substance abuse. This detox center also provides an inpatient facility for those after their stay from withdrawal services. This can help with their struggle with addiction, getting nursing care, therapy and support. Bipolar disorder, which is also called manic-depression, is a term used to define forms of irregular and intense mood swings that can make someone be depressed one day and a complete maniac the next. Unlike other medical conditions, bipolar disorder does not only affect one’s life, but it can also have an impact on other individuals. The extreme mood swings can have a major consequence on someone’s social life and cause one to fail in his or her career or education. Even though bipolar is not the immense discussion in medical disorders; it is still a dangerous condition that affects a multitude of individuals in the world. Many suffer severe symptoms and dangers but they can still live a satisfying life with treatments and therapy.
