1. I learned that Horizon Health Services is a non-for-profit facility that provides mental health counseling as well as rehabilitation for addiction. This organization has a variety of locations in Buffalo and also has a detox center downtown. The detox center has medical monitoring while individuals are going through withdrawal symptoms of substance abuse. This detox center also provides an inpatient facility for those after their stay from withdrawal services. This can help with their struggle with addiction, getting nursing care, therapy and support. 2. From the presentation on opioid addiction, I learned that deaths due to drug overdose of opioids and heroin have effected the white population the greatest.

Memorial Medical Center was situated “three feet below sea level, which is on one of the low points in the bowl in New Orleans (Fink, Sheri, 2009).” This hospital served as a “shelter whenever hurricanes threatened: employees would bring their families and pets, as well as coolers packed with food (Fink, Sheri, 2009).” Having 2,000 people taking shelter in this hospital on top of 200 patients, and over 600 workers in one place during a category 5 hurricane, ran a huge risk. This was not something that was assessed, because the author stated, “this is something that citizens who live around the hospital normally do during a crisis like this (Fink, Sheri, 2009).” I also do not think that individuals believed that Hurricane Katrina would have been as bad as it was, because this is the storm that is considered to be a “lesson learned (President George W. Bush, 2005)”.
Lexington Medical Center is located in West Columbia, South Carolina. It is in the heart of the midlands here and is the hospital that everyone knows and loves. They have a 414 bed medical complex along with 60 medical practices, 6 community medical and urgent care centers, an occupational health center, Alzheimer’s care center and the largest extended care facility in the Carolinas. These facilities are served by over 600 physicians and 1,600 nurses within the hospital network.

Drug and alcohol rehab programs in the area provide residents with treatment methods ranging from “traditional” recovery options to those that offer alternative styles (e.g. holistic medicine). While the decision to get help with drug or alcohol addiction problems is often a personal choice, many people include their loved ones in the process in order to obtain insight and a different perspective. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Heritage Valley Medical Center case study. The paper will start off with a brief background of Heritage Valley, along with a summary of the major problems and issues faced there. Next, the author will explain the role that was chosen while addressing the challenges of Heritage Valley and their reasoning in doing so. The author will then identify the strengths and weaknesses of Heritage Valley and offer to select the best alternative and recommended solutions, which will be followed by a brief description of the evaluation plan that could be used to measure the effectiveness of the recommended solution.
In patient programs can also be very effective, especially for those with more severe problems. They are highly structured programs in which patients remain at a residence, typically for 6 to 12 months. Treatment Centers differ from other treatment approaches principally in their use of the community—treatment staff and those in recovery—as a key agent of change to influence patient attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors associated with drug use. Patients in TCs may include those with relatively long histories of drug addiction, involvement in serious criminal activities, and seriously impaired social functioning. The focus of the TC is on the resocialization of the patient to a drug-free, free living lifestyle and delivers healthy coping mechanisms for individuals that have not been able to function in society without the use of a mood altering substance.
