As a main character, Marcus Yallow is many things. He is brave, courageous, and concerned for the well-being of others. He rises up into a position that could cause harm to himself, and does the best that he can with what he has to lead hundreds, if not thousands of people, in a rebellion against the government. Marcus guides people through one of the toughest things that a person could go through. Marcus Yallow is a role model for many people. The first, and the most important, example of Marcus being a role model is the basic plot of the entire book. Marcus leads many people through the rebellion. On several occasions, Marcus is part of a few intense discussions while in class. One example of this is a debate about what a terrorist is. Marcus participates in a calm and serene manner. He, unlike Charles, listens to what everyone else has to say with an open mind. The most impressive part of the whole discussion is when Marcus quotes word for word the Declaration of Independence. This is very impressive because it shows that he does not just pull things out of thin air and expect people to take his word for it. Marcus is a debate role model for many people. Marcus has had every reason on Earth to run away and stop fighting, but he cared enough about the other people that were affected to stay and fight with them. Marcus shows the ability to care about others throughout the entire book. He does almost all of his fighting for Darryl. Marcus could have assumed that Darryl was dead like almost everyone else had, but he wanted to fight if only for the memory of his friend. His ability to put aside his fears and fight for what his friends is what makes Marcus a role model for caring for others. Marcus Yallow shows many important characteristics for being a role model. His life is one that people should want to follow, but perhaps avoid the terrorist attack and torture part. He leads people through example. His actions are ones that should be replicated by anyone who wants to become a selfless, respected,
