Poetry is an artistic form that can be used in a variety of ways to depict and convey various emotions, using words to paint images in the minds of its readers. The writer carefully chooses their words to convey particular ideas or themes and are limited only by their vocabulary and, depending on the poetry form, the syllable count. The poets of the Manyoshu, a Japanese anthology of poetry, was written primarily using Chinese characters and used choka, a long poetic form that fell out of use, and tanka, which was much shorter. Within the Manyoshu there are two very important poets, Hitomaru and Okura, who differ greatly in their use of poetry, particularly in their themes, occasion of composition and the imagery used in their poems. He shows the conflicts between the ideologies within two different poems. The first poem is set up like a discussion between two men, one rich and one poor, showing conflicts between the ideas of obligations to one’s family found in Confucianism and one’s detachment of the material world found in Buddhism. This is expressed most explicitly in the line where the poor man desires release from the world, to be like a bird and fly away from his problems, but, is unable to do so as he as responsibilities to his family to “work as all men do” (Shirane 97-98). The second poem by Okura that shows his peculiar poetic style the one titled “On Thinking of Children”, where he discusses his conflicts between familial love and spirituality. Where no matter how much one devotes themselves to seeking Buddhist enlightenment or how precious the Buddhist treasures are, they cannot surpass the treasure, the love, that one has for their children (Shirane 99). The themes embedded in Okura’s poetry highlight the conflicts that occur between these beliefs and how they contradict each other in one’s daily
