As a coach, the manager has the role to train and motivate the people they must lead. This means that a manager is expected to have certain skills and expertise in the area of their work. A leader, a manager, and a manager as coach share one thing in common. They all work towards a specific goal and uses resources to accomplish that goal. The role of a manager as coach does not fit the healthcare system. The healthcare system needs good managers and leaders and not coaches. Leadership development is critical in any level of organization (McNamara, 2007). Healthcare is among the most regulated of all industries in the world (Garman, 2006). So good leaders and managers are vital for a healthcare system to succeed. The health care sector requires extensive experience, training, and skills. The Nhs leadership framework (2011), was launched to the recognition of the ability of clinical leaders must influence the delivery of care. In addition, clinical leaders do not only know how to deliver care but design it hence the need of the framework to educate empower and increase their full potential(Matlock,2011). This agrees with the Darzi report (2008) that emphasised that it is through the unlocking of talent that quality of care can be achieved. Cummings et al (2008) also noted that leadership could be improved through education. The framework is not only limited to clinical leaders but is extended to all disciplines working within the healthcare setting. This is to ensure those that have potential to lead could be supported through the required training and education (Nhs Leadership Frame work ,2013). Five areas of competence have been used to address the qualities of leadership. These consist of the ability to demonstrate personal qualities, managing services, working well with others and improving of services. The phrase “leader” versus “manager.” is used to show and compere how Leading is related to managing, Bennis and Nanus (1985:21) help us understand the broader role of supervision in their discussion of management and leadership: “To be a manager is to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge of, responsibility for, to conduct. Leading, on the other hand, is influencing, guiding in direction, course, action, opinion.” They go on to say that managers are people who “do things right,” and leaders are people who “do the right things.” Managers are more efficiency driven and focus on mastering routine activities, while leaders are driven by vision and judgment. Managers tend to be bean counters, while leaders focus on achieving desired results.
There are many responsibilities that go hand in hand while being in Medical Office Management. Being a leader is a significant skill that is required for the job, and it is one I feel I have, but can always improve on. While there are many other skills one will need to be a successful Medical Manager, they are ones that are learned in time. Many of which are taught during certification programs and on the job experience. Being fit to be a Medical Office Manager is crucial. There are long work days full of paperwork and meeting with executives, as well as crunching numbers and overseeing employees. Setting goals through the day and long term goals, will help me and others be effective leaders.
Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. We must also know that we can use our leadership skills in the same situations. On the other hand we have also learned that leaders are people who have an impact on those that surround them. The main difference that separates these two roles is that management is a function that must be utilized in any type of business, and leadership is the relationship that the leader has with his followers, which in turn can motivate and energize the organization.

The complexity of the health care system provides a unique dilemma for leaders. Health care systems are multi-dimensional; composed of numerous specialties, professional areas, and multidisciplinary interests who often have conflicting goals. Great leadership needs to capitalize on the diversity within health care organizations, efficiently utilize resources when designing management processes, and encourage personnel in diverse health areas to work towards common goals (AL-Sawai, 2013). A number of leadership approaches can be adapted to the healthcare setting to optimize management in this unique and complex environment.
A coach is the initial leader and face of a team. He should work on creating an atmosphere of pride for the team and area they’re representing and teach each player the importance of attitude, confidence, character, knowledge, goal setting, and be able to tie these qualities into life as they represent the team off the field as well. Some of the critical problems and active debates prevalent in many hospital organizations include the rapidly intensifying healthcare costs, funding and reimbursement cutbacks, and concern regarding the overall quality and safety of health care. “Healthcare systems have come under pressure to improve performance and manage productivity” (Botting, 2011). To be successful in the 21st century, there is a demand on healthcare systems to have a vision and executive and clinical leadership to inspire the change process and make the difference between success and failure in change.

There is a difference between management and leadership but that does not mean that one is less important than the other. However, it takes an excellent leader and manager to be able to fulfill the Leadership and Management role successfully for the benefit of the company and his or her people in all aspects of the business fields. Therefore, every company, big or small, must have people whom they can depend on, whole heartedly, who can fulfill the Leadership and Management positions without worrying about negative outcomes or costly legal issues.
Here, in addition to being well-trained, they typically do have some relevant experience as a leader, and often have accumulated additional knowledge on topics of frequent interest to their leadership clients such as: common leadership models and competencies, leadership and communication styles, team development, confidence building, stress management, etc. However, here in the middle of the spectrum coaches may not lead with assessments or have as much of a prescriptive approach. Typically the majority of leadership coaches tend to meet whatever agenda a client brings to coaching. (With my leadership coaching clients the 3 most common topics that contribute the greatest value are usually: 1) Learning the various core leadership competencies - which include; challenging the status quo, developing a compelling vision that connects to all constituents, enabling/empowering others, walking the talk as a leader, and mastering the wide range of emotional and communication skills required to keep people emotionally engaged. 2) Understanding the different common styles of leadership, (commanding, pace setting, visionary, coaching, etc.) their strengths and weakness and when a particular style is most effective. 3) Stress and time management.
