Managers gain their notoriety through the dedication to their job, reinforcing and implementing all job expectancies, and making sure they are aware of the influence they have on others. Managers need to be self assured and confident in taking on the lead role by following through with directives and being able to give directives. Managers need to have a strong personality and assertion when the opportunity arises. Being able to come together with upper management shows strength. Excellent coaching abilities are necessary because that will be a large portion of the duties. Most managers are taught to focus on results more than methods. Communication and dialogue are the most effective methods to have in order to know what is going on in cross-cultural and diverse environments. Keeping a successful business depends on the quality of communication and understanding that exists between executives, managers, supervisors, other colleagues, and customers. Staff needs to know the elements of professional behavior and it is the responsibility of the manager to coach staff in upholding these standards. As a cross-functional team leader it is imperative that they recognize talent and contribution of each employee. Team leaders have to establish ways on keeping your teams focused on goals, measurements, and outcomes. Staff should be able to facilitate a sense of diversity, interdependence, and accountability to each other and customers. Listening skills is at least fifty percent of effective communication, which is vital for providing quality service. A manager needs to monitor their own listening skills along with their staff. One way to reach subordinates is to give them the freedom to make decisions on their own, and help them to develop short and long-term goals. We all know that everyone is not all created equal in terms of intelligence, energy level, physical health, or motivations to achieve (Carnegie, 1975). However, each person should be encouraged to contribute to the limits of their his or her capabilities. The effort will pay off in creative ideas, new approaches and constructive evaluations that will result in a more effective company.
