Education is equally important for everyone and it does not matter where you come from, what ethnicity you have, what language you speak, what gender or sexual preferences you have. Everybody are entitled to equal treatment and the right to an education. For Malcolm X, Sherman Alexie, and Mike Rose things were different. They all fought various inequalities and obstacles with one goal in common: education. In Malcolm X's "Learning to Read," he tells the story of how he taught himself to read from the inside of a prison and how that nurtured his future career as a political activist. In Sherman Alexie's "The joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me," he talks about how Indians are expected to fail in non-Indian society and he claims that …show more content…

Alexie said "As Indian children, we were expected to fail in the non-Indian world," (Alexie 17). That statement shows us that he found motivation in wanting to prove the society wrong. It also tells us that he went on and got his education because he wanted to be successful and better than the rest, and being better is a power. In this case, the word better serves for the term more knowledge because that is what education gives you. When it comes to higher education you can choose what subject you want to gain more knowledge on and when you are done, you will get a degree. If you obtain this power of education it is a fact that your chances to get a job are greater and, therefore the chances of a better life are increased. "For example, in 2014, the employment rate for young adults ages 20 to 24 with a bachelor's degree or higher was higher than the rate for young adults with some college (88.1 vs. 75.0 percent)," (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics). Our identity is something that is unique for each and everyone on this planet and we can discover our identity through many things, one is education. Mike Rose talks about how his mentor, Jack MacFarland, motivated and helped him to study, to go to college and get an education. Regarding his education Rose said "It enabled me to do things in the world," (Rose 358). Through his education, Rose found his identity and calling to pursue a career as a teacher.
