Deep in the sub-Saharan land in Africa, is the country of Malawi. Little was known about this mysterious country until the early 1900s. Now we know Malawi has an abundance of rich culture, filled with fascinating history from prehistoric times to the present. Malawi is spread across 45,747 miles of land (which is about the size of Pennsylvania). It is bordered by three nations. In the north is the country of Tanzania, in the south is Mozambique, and toward the east is the nation of Zambia. Malawi lies within the Great Rift Valley system. On the east side of the country is Lake Malawi, the twelfth largest lake in the world. The lake is a vast 360 miles long! More missionaries followed and British merchants began to sell goods in the region. Gradually the British kept gaining more and more control. After hundreds of years of this, Malawians wanted freedom. Finally, jafter many small wars Britain granted the Malawians independence. On July 6, 1964, Malawi was a free country. After their independence, there were some corrupt one party leaders in office. These leaders would take away their food, homes, and medicine, so they could become more rich and powerful. Worst of all, these leaders would let thousands starve and die from easily treated diseases. In 1993 the Malawians had enough. They over through the current leader and had an official meeting about the future of Malawi. The people had to decide if they wanted a one party leader or a democracy. The great majority voted for a democracy. Elections were held on May 17, 1993. They elected Bilki Muluzi as their new president. In recent time Malawi has achieved steady economic growth. Malawi is still a very impoverished country, but many are optimistic about the future of
