What happens when someone becomes depressed? Usually people may not think it is too serious and tell them just to shake it off or get over it. However, depression is a serious illness that if the person does not seek treatment, can lead to suicide. Depression is seriously overlooked by the public as just someone being sad about something for a day, but it is much more than that. Depression can last days, weeks, or even years without any stop. No matter what people may say about depression, it is a very serious affliction that can affect people’s live and those around them.

The areas of high depression are mostly southern states such as Tennessee, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi, which has the highest rate of depression in the country with over 14% of Mississippians having depression. However, southern states aren't the only leaders of depression. Many northern states also have high rates of depression, such as Indiana, Michigan, and Missouri. Men are almost 200 times more likely to attempt suicide less than one month after a previous attempt. So while women lead the charts in depression levels, men top the chart in suicide attempts. A person's age also has a large effect on their likelihood to contract depression. Almost 3% of people with depression are age 18 to 24 but almost 5% of people with depression are age 45 to 64. This is because a major factor of depression can be unemployment or divorce, which is far more likely in the older age
