Origin - The Maine Coon is a natural breed, however currently the actual origin of the Main Coon is still underway. The "myth" of the Maine Coon coming about from the mating of raccoon and domestic cat is amongst the most popular. Although this is genetically and scientifically impossible to achieve, it first came about to be believed due to its unique brown raccoon-like markings and big bushy tail. "Maine Shags" were the name given to those that had markings any other color besides the brown coat. Theory of Maine Coons coming about from Viking's bringing these animals over into North America has been one of many popular theories. However, the most common theory is that of Marie Antoinette. Why can’t we shoot/trap the American River Otter? It is a animal with a very expensive fur. Their fur is the most dense fur on earth, for example, they have about one million hairs per square inch on their fur, which is because they have no blubber to keep themselves warm. Some cool facts about the otter are, that they can live their whole lives without getting out of the water. In other words, it does not get tired of swimming. Some reasons why we want to get rid of them are; the otter has been eating all the fish we like to catch. Some examples are, Crayfish, Salmon, and Trout. Another reason is the Otter has been eating all the water fowl. Some cool waterfowl are, Geese, Ducks, and their eggs. Reason
A muskrat is known for it’s black-ish brown color but muskrats can also be black, white, silver, and tan. A muskrat also has a long scaly tail, that is almost half its body length, which is 22-25 inches. This scaly tail is the main source of power when swimming. A typical muskrat normally weighs about 1.3-4.4 pounds. They also have slightly webbed feet to help them swim easily. On top of that muskrats have two layers thick fur that almost seems like wool to protect them from cold water. A muskrat has a very compact body, with a small head and small ears to make it easier for them to get around quickly while in water.
Gopher tortoise are ectotherms that can mostly be found in the southeastern parts of the United States because of the sunnier weather in that area. They are known for digging burrows underground that can be 12 meters long and 3 meters deep. Many species live with the gopher tortoise in the burrows that they make for protection against fire, predators and also for warmth during the cold nights and to stay cool in the hot days. Species that lives with the gopher tortoise includes: rabbits, burrowing owls, mouse, frogs and many different types of small insects. Since the gopher tortoise are considered as threatened species, it has become very important to protect them as the burrows that they dig helps to increase the diversity of species in the area. There are also many causes that has led to them becoming threatened such as their low reproduction rate, loss of habitat due to urbanization and the predators that prey on their eggs and young hatchlings. Because the gopher tortoise can only lay up to 8 eggs in one year, protecting the eggs from predators like coyotes or raccoons is crucial for their future population. Also, protecting the young hatchlings is just as important because they are still
all puffins mostly eat small sea animals, such as sand eels, herring, hake and capelin. Puffin diets vary from colony to colony because of the variety of fish around the breeding islands. During winter puffins may also eat crustaceans, but their preferred food is fish. For most of the year, Atlantic puffins live on the open ocean, with a range spanning from the eastern coast of Canada and the northern United States to the western coast of Europe and northern Russia. 60% of the world's puffins live near Iceland. Puffins are specially adapted to living on the open
In the wild, identification would not be an issue as the cats inhabit different continents - the jaguar is the only member of the panthera family to be found in the Americas and its is by far the biggest cat on the continent. The Jaguars range, which once spanned from the southern states of the USA down to the tip of South America, now centres on the north and central parts of the South American continent. The jaguar is predominantly a forest dweller with the highest population densities centring on the lowland rain forests of the Amazon Basin - dry woodland and grassland also serve as suitable terrain, although the cat is rarely found in areas above 8000 feet.
“200 years ago, there was around 16 million greater sage grouse; Today there may be fewer than 200,000” (Dantzker and Swartwout). The Greater Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a magnificent bird that only lives in the Sagebrush-steppe habitat. This habitat is seen in the western part of the United States and also some area of North and South America. From the study above, it should be obvious that the greater sage grouse were considered endangered by Fish and Wildlife Organizations. However, on September 30th, 2015, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Organization removed the sage grouse from the endangered “candidates” list, and stated that they would enforce plans to help the conservation of these birds. People should be aware that this is
...kat as you may have noticed by now is not actually a cat. It is a member of the mongoose family. All mongooses are almost the same, the only main difference is where they live and how they have adapted to that environment. The main types of mongooses are: the mongoose, the weasle, the squirrel, and civets and genets. Mongooses live in Asia, Africa, and Europe, Mongooses are also much bigger than a meerkat, but not as smart. Weasels live all over the world except in islands and polar regions. Weasels are a little bit smaller than meerkats, but much more vulnerable. They dont have burrow systems, sharp claws, live in groups or any of the smarts of a meerkat. Squirrels can range from one-seventh of the weight of a meerkat to seven times bigger than a meerkat depending on the breed. They live in almost every continent except antarctica, and nest in woodlands or plains.
Lontra candensis, river otters, use their pheromones in a behavior commonly referred to as scent marking. River otters are semi-aquatic, carnivorous mammals that live mainly in inland waterways, ponds, and lakes. They are most well-known for their playful antics, and they can be observed playing in their natural habitats throughout North America.1 Scent marking is a behavior that has been observed in several different animal species, particularly mammals, but for otters it is very strange. Otters are semi-aquatic, and aquatic animals usually do not partake in this behavior. There are many different hypotheses as to why otters demonstrate this behavior.
