The recent events have caused me to speak out to uncover the hidden issues which have plagued the MSU Veterinary Technology program. During the writing of this letter, I recalled one of the program’s greatest experiences. This was the program which was the white coat ceremony and the reading of the Veterinary Technician Code of Conduct by myself and student cohort. I can no longer sit back, letting my voice be unheard seeing several students removed from the program based in part on teacher instruction. I have not chosen to write about the several personal struggles I have had with faculty instruction. The complexity and diversity of the animal kingdom has always captivated me. This has resulted in a desire to accomplish a place in Veterinary Nursing. This aspiration has it’s origins in an early family life occupied with animals and pets, a developing interest in the science and wellbeing of animals and an expanding sense of duty for the care we owe to the creatures which convey true companionship and loyalty. For this project, I decided to take on the career of a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I would have to examine animals to diagnose their health problems, treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals,test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment(x-ray machines, etc.), advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments, prescribe medication, and euthanize animals. To get a job in this profession, you have to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You also have to have to take many science classes including biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, zoology, microbiology, and animal science.You would have to take about four years of college which adds up to about $100,000 dollars in student
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
Many people have lost their pets and close family members because there is no way to get the help or medical attention that the animal so desperately needed. Every day in the United States, veterinarians are working hard to save animal’s lives. People will always continue to want and to breed pets. Therefore, to help and cure all these pets, a steady stream of veterinarians will be needed for many years to come. Over the years, the requirements and processes to becoming a veterinarian have changed. To become a successful veterinarian one must complete all necessary education and on the job training, be friendly and love animals, and have a burning passion to help both the pet and the pet owner.
The pet food industry as described by IBIS World is an industry in which "Major players compete on price, quality, ingredients and nutrients" (Pet Food Production in the US: Market Research Report, 2015). In this pure competition industry, there are dominant companies such as Mars, Inc. and Nestlé Purina sharing a 24 billion dollar market (Pet Food Production in the US: Market Research Report, 2015).
Humanity has relied heavily on animals for millennia, for everything from food to transport, companionship and entertainment, and as such animal welfare is a topic that is hugely important to us as a society. My passion for the preservation of animal health coupled with my love of science has set me up perfectly for a career as a veterinary surgeon.
Choosing a career path that is both enjoyable and sensible is crucial. By researching the necessary education, skills, daily life, job demand, salary and job satisfaction of veterinary technicians and lawyers, I am able to decide a future career. In the personal aspect of my life, I enjoy working with people and helping care for animals. This leaves me conflicted on what career path to take. By weighing factors such as education, salary and job demand, my choice is to follow the career path of a veterinary technician. Technicians earn a degree within two years, while a lawyer take seven years or beyond. By completing a two year degree, I can have a job position quickly, doing something that I love. I finished my first semester of school at Colorado Mountain College where I am studying to become a Certified Veterinary Technician. I moved from Vermont, rather last minute, upon finally finding a place to live. It was quite a task. Upon my arrival, I hit the ground running with my classes. My commute was between 3-5 hours every day due to the bridge being closed, and yet I managed to attain a 3.47 GPA while studying on 4 buses each direction. I feel relieved and saddened at the same time because some of my colleagues who were on “this side” of the bridge were not able to complete the semester. However, some of them will come back and give it a go now that the bridge is completed. My commute will be 30 minutes each direction, thank goodness!
Through my experiences, I have learned the reality of veterinary medicine. It is not about playing with puppies and kittens. My clients might not appreciate me, my patients might be difficult, I may get frustrated, and I might not make much money. Yet veterinary medicine is about more than that. It is a career with purpose, a lifelong source of challenge, personal growth, fulfilled academic curiosity, and opportunities to impact lives, both human and animal. In return, I offer a strong scientific aptitude, along with a diverse background and natural empathy. It will not be easy, but a degree in veterinary medicine is, without a doubt, my next pivotal step in
“The most successful Veterinary Technicians are passionate about the animals that they see on a daily basis and be able to control their emotions” (Career Cruising). The care of animals is very important so they don’t feel threatened by the Veterinary Technician and claw, bite, or growl at them. Veterinary Technicians must show their love of animals to the patients and their owners. many animals will feel the emotions that people give off and the animal can react to that emotion in a good or in a bad case bad. A Vet Technicians job is to be calm and not show emotions to the patient and family so the family won’t have emotional distress towards the clinic.
First of all, classes such as these would prepare students who are planning on entering that occupational field. Many students have entered that particular field in college, however too many have no high school education pertaining to it. The job outlook for a profession dealing with animals—such as a veterinarian—is expected to increase by thirty-six percent within the next ten years.* At the same time however, high school students preparing to become a veterinarian are only taking the general science classes because they do not have the option of taking any animal science classes.* Many other classes that act as additional help to prepare for a specific occupation are being offered. At Hurricane High School alone, there are over 20 Career Technology Education classes including Foods and Nutrition, Clothing, Emergency Medical Services, and several more. ...animals in need. I will be able to walk in every day and be the reason an animal walks away wagging its tail, or just feeling better. I cannot wait to work alongside a veterinarian and fellow technicians or assistants. I believe that the way I feel about an animal’s welfare will make me an appropriate asset to any veterinary care team. I understand that animals have all the feelings and the emotions humans have. I wish to make a difference in an animal and he or she’s caregivers’ life. I know that as a veterinary technician it will not be easy and the recovery of an animal will not always unfortunately be successful. I will try my absolute best to aide in the well-being of any animal no matter what. I will remember what college and my instructors have taught me and I will use the skills in my career doing what I have always wanted to do--give back to animal lives.
I entered the center completely unprepared for the level of education and hard work that the center demanded, but thrived knowing that I was helping heal animals in peril (many of whom were there directly because of human actions). After many hours of feeding, cage cleaning, and handling dangerous patients, I felt as though I had learned as much from the animals as I had my teachers. However, I also found myself frustrated more often than not when I found a limit to my ability to aid animals. There is no worse feeling than knowing that an animal urgently needs care that you are unable to provide. This feeling encouraged me to further my education in animal care, so that I can be the best caretaker possible for animals in
