M. Night Shyamalan is a successful director who takes part in screenwriting, producing and is even known for being an actor in his own movie. The success of his movie The Sixth Sense defined his career, followed by Unbreakable, The Visit and Wide Awake. After the release of these great titles, Shyamalan experienced some disappointing releases. Now, however, he seems to be turning things around with his recent movie Split, which shows how different people deal with abuse. Shyamal is known for his horror/thriller style and his supernatural plots to emphasize and bring to the light issue of people in a modern world. Shyamalan uses color, lighting, camera angles and interaction between character to really bring meaning to his plot. In the movie Split, three girls get kidnapped by a man named Kevin who is diagnosed with 23 different personalities. Even though Shyamalan focused more on the character, Kevin, he developed one of the kidnapped girls, Casey. This makes her different from the two girls because now Shyamalan could develop her character in a way to help them escape. Shyamalan suggests that the two “normal” girls have an unrealistic illusion of safety and that they are quick to try to escape, while Casey, on the other hand, didn't grow up with this sense of safety and her trauma made her more aware of the …show more content…
This helps him create a more realistic setting and work in an environment that he is comfortable with and know well. Shyamalan films also use bright lights as a symbol. In the movie split, when the girl is having flashbacks of her father before the traumatic incident, Shyamalan uses bright yellow and orange colors to set the scene. This is also evident in his other movies such as red colors in the Sixth Sense to show the importance and use green and purple in Unbreakable to give it a comic like a

Lighting is one of the most important cinematic technique Burton use to create different types of mood. He uses couple types of lighting such as high key lighting, low key lighting and also the side lighting in order to create positive emotion, negative emotion and contrast between brightness and darkness. For example in “Edward Scissorhands” he uses high key lighting in town where everyone lives to emphasize happiness or positive atmosphere. In contrast, Edward’s house where he used to
For example, in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) Burton implements dim lighting during meaningful moments and bright lighting during more vibrant moments. This effectively conveys the tone set for the scene and maintains a clear balance in the scene. This helps the audience clearly understand the scene’s characteristics and its meaning to the film. Similarly, in Edward Scissorhands (1990) Burton utilizes lighting to set contrast between the characters. The superficial town is set in a bright, sunny setting, however, the lives the characters lead are quite the opposite of bright. These individuals spend their free time judging others and have no individuality whatsoever. Furthermore, Edward, one of the only characters who is kindhearted, is portrayed in dull, dark lighting. The lighting contrasts with his sweet personality to emphasize who is accepted and who is not. This contrast helps the audience understand the contradicting worlds of Edward and the frivolous town. In addition, in Big Eyes (2014) Burton implements lighting to show the slow transition of Margaret Keane’s life. The lighting depicts the dulling of her life as she faces troubles in her life. The use of lighting here helps the audience see the clear transition in Margaret Keane's life and clearly understand the conflict in her life. Similarly, Burton utilizes lighting in his films
It's the first thing people notice, so it has to be done logically to persuade the audience to feel a certain way. In the trailer for Leatherface, color is used to generate a feeling of suspense by shifting back and forth between a warmer, daylight tone to a darker, blue tone. In the beginning of the trailer, a couple is driving in a car laughing and having fun as seen in figure 1. There is a warmer tone created by the use of natural daylight to make the audience feel how the couple is feeling. Following the playful feeling created by the first scene, the color shifts when the protagonist and her child are introduced. The scene, shown in figure 2, is dimly lit by candles with no other light. Switching to darker lighting hints to the audience that the characters involved in the scene could be related to or are the problem presented in the movie. Going back to the natural daylight, figure 3 demonstrates the next shift in color when the sheriff is talking to the protagonist about her children. In this scene, the daylight is used to highlight and create shadows on
A zombie is a monster that has been a horror movie legacy for many years now. Zombie is defined as “a dead person who is able to move because of magic according to some religions and in stories, movies, etc.” Zombies haven’t always been the creature that we see today though. George A. Romero merged the old-forgotten zombie into the standardized version we see today. James Conroy writes, “With his 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, George Romero brought the concept of the slow-moving, flesh-eating zombie into mainstream American culture.” (1) Night of the Living Dead not only set an iconic image for zombies, but it also brought issues you would not normally see in a Zombie film, dealing with race and gender stereotypes.
His experimental and unique perverse screenwriting has shocked and inspired numerous people. His aesthetics painted horror vividly and presented itself dramatically. His musical and cinematic vision was a healthy extension of his devilishly, clever, and demented mind. His modes of publication with music, film and print, had and still a tremendous fanbase. He has gained our attention in every media related forum and we can’t look away, even if we try. He has left us cheering, screaming and on the edge of our seats. We leave feeling bad about ourselves for watching his visual storytelling unfold. “You know, it’s like, I’m going to sit here for 90 minutes and watch these guys get fucked up with no hope. That’s what I love about these films, you walk out feeling bad about yourself, saying “Why did I enjoy that? What does this say about me as a person?” It is a cathartic experience that horror lovers can have again and again. Not acting on those horrific urges, but instead, becoming one of his characters that were just never really understood and that evil is real. Evil never dies and revenge always wins or at least in horror

There are a lot of people who either wonder or believe that violent media is bad for people and mostly children. Not all violent media is bad. Sometimes when people have a stressful day they will play video games to let off steam. A few people like watching horror movies because of the thrill of being scared. But if you’re a kid with no friends or you are alone most of the time, you might enjoy comic books. They are filled with action and heroes. Doing any of these can give off a sense of adventure, thrill, and excitement. It doesn’t mean that you’re going to go off and start hurting people because of it. There is a lot of evidence that states the media affects viewers by encouraging violent behavior and weakening their creative ability. The question is whether the media is truly the problem, or is it the parental role that is the problem.
The vibrant use of colors is meant to express the environmental conditions, as well as the character’s emotions. The main color during the whole film is red. The film uses red, yellow and orange to show me and keep reminding me about the heat. There is a scene in the film where three men sit against this bright red wall, and this shot isn 't just shown once in the film but multiple times. Even though the bright sun is never shown, I can tell how hot it is because of the colors. It also uses red to convey the character’s emotions such as anger, struggle, dissatisfaction, and frustration. For example, Jade’s apartment is red color to show Jade is a frustrated character in the film. It’s as though; colors were characters in the movie
This technique is useful in films because it can give off a spooky or Happy feeling towards the audience. In Edward Scissorhands In the beginning of the film the town that peg lives in all bright and full of color and everything is happy. But then you see the mansion Edward lives in and its all dark and dull so it gives a creepy feeling about the film. In the movie Big Fish they used color for when Edward Bloom was walking through the Dark and creepy forest, It made the audience feel like something bad was going to happen. But then Edward found this Town that was all happy and full of color so the audience then thought oh wait this is going to be a happy moment in the movie.
Despite the hundreds of thousands of legendary and adventurous books, many movie directors fail to recreate these pieces in a cinematic style. Director of: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Big Fish (2003), and Edward Scissorhands (1990)—along with many other movies,— Tim Burton produces his films with an eerie elegance.
