Every person who favors desserts has at some point in their life either enjoyed a round ball of hardened candy on a stick or took pleasure in eating a frozen flavored icicle on a tongue depressor. Of course these two aforementioned delights are none other than the adored lollipops and popsicles consumed by so many around the world every year. These two quick-to-eat treats have been around for quite some time now. To be exact, Frank Epperson invented the popsicle when he was only 11 years young way back in 1905. George Smith invented the (modern-styled at least) lollipop in 1908. Lollipops and popsicles although invented around the same time, were made with very different motivations and reasons. He noticed how kids always had much trouble with handling it because there was nothing to hold onto except the actual piece of candy. Because of this he came up with the idea of mounting the candy onto a tightly wrapped paper stick so the consumer could hold on to that instead. The reason the popsicle was born however, was much different. One very cold night in 1908, Frank Epperson (only 11 at the time) decided to mix together powdered soda and water with a mixing stick. Accidentally forgetting about it, he left it on his porch for the whole night. The next day he woke to see on his porch, the mixture had froze with the mixing stick still in the cup almost like an icicle. This awoke the idea from him of the popsicle.
