Balzac Thesis Assignment Dai Sijie’s “{Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress,” is a unique historical fiction book that follows the path of two young males as they try to make the most of their days at the dreadful place they are being reeducated in. Sent away to a camp where they would be taught about the Communist values, they try their best to cope with their new home by reading forbidden Western Literature Books. They learn get many new insights on the Western world and even share their findings with a girl. They are completely changed in the end, but throughout process of changing, they have the opportunity to witness freedom and salvation from all the hardships they were in. While they are able to get the most out of their lives in the Reeducation camps, they are unaware of how much of a huge change they are bringing onto the Little Seamstress. From the first time that Lou says, “With these books I shall transform the Little Seamstress. She’ll never be a simple mountain girl again,” (100) he manages to change her in a way they left him scared in the end. He doesn’t realize that by reading to her so much, they make her change her views on the place she lives and the people she lives with. She wants to live in the city where she could be free and be loved the way she wants. While this again, brings back the idea of the Western Literature representing freedom, it has been a huge disappointment for both Lou and Ma, who loves her dearly. They have lost a very close person and ends up burning the books they adore. Even after Ma goes through all the trouble of getting her abortion, she still has to leave. Many would say that they might have been better of just being friends with the Little Seamstress as they are at the beginning.
