The JP Morgan Chase Summer Institutes are a series of two week long programs that focus on college readiness, technical and academic careers. Throughout the summer, they have multiple institutes that take place in our local community colleges. This past summer, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend one of their institutes. Although, no one was officially assigned a leadership role, I took the initiative during many activities to become the leader of my group. These groups ranged from small to large groups. The small groups consisted of five to ten students while the large group consisted of all of the students enrolled in the program which was over fifty. My role consisted of being the leader during many problem solving activities. Also, when it came time to volunteer for certain activities, I would always be the first one to set the example and others would follow.
I aspired to play a significant leadership role in all of the activities someday, and over the course of my high school career, I thankfully have. This year as a senior, the student body elected me as the president of Student Council; members of National Honor Society (NHS) did the same; future business leaders elected me as the vice president of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA); and I received the votes to secure the office of secretary in the local Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter. There are so many reasons why I want to be a link crew leader. First of all, if I was a link crew leader, it means that I will be able to help the incoming freshmen. I remember going to the orientation in 9th grade. I was so scared, but the link crew leaders told me that I would be okay. The encouragement and the positivity that they showed me help me a lot and I really want to do the same for the upcoming freshmen. It was a bit intimidating, considering I wasn’t the confident 17-year-old I am now. What made it easier was that I had a Link Crew Leader. In order to give back to my school, I decided to be a Link Crew Leader as well and after going through an interview I was given the position. Link Crew is a program created for incoming grade eights. We as leaders welcome new students to our school, make them feel comfortable and create an environment where they can be themselves. This eventually enables all these students to place all their energy on their education without having to worry about other social issues. When I was first elected as section leader in the TWCP Marching Band my junior year, I had a copious amount of hope in the people around me. Even though we did not share the same beliefs and interests, I felt that with my leadership position, I can still help those newer members thrive in band and make their time worthwhile. I have been given several opportunities to teach these skills to younger girls, including organizing the San Francisco Girl Scout Skills Camporee training, where we trained Girl Scouts of all ages for the annual Skills Camporee. For multiple years in a row, girls in my troop and I organized and designed the training activities for this event. Events like this have improved my leadership abilities and inspired me to continue learning as a Girl Scout. Of all of the amazing experiences that I have gotten from Girl Scouts, the most important to me has been the opportunities to meet hundreds of other inspired young women and help them enrich their own lives through Girl Scout programs. I am currently in the Washington Army National Guard and love the leadership skills it has given me. Over the last five years of being in the guard, I have been given many leadership opportunities; such as being the shift lead for the airfield while on deployment. Through the process of this class I have been able to reflect and analyze how I am as a leader as well as a co-leader in a group setting. I believe throughout this process of being part of a group as a member and leader has help me further define the roles that I will play in group counseling in the future. Ford’s quote captures my entire Launch experience into one thought. Over the course of four days, I learned more about myself than I probably have in the past four years. As well as learning about myself, I also grew to know twenty-two strangers I had never met before. My MOI classmates came to be the first group of students I truly got to know and form relationships with at Loras. These relationships would not be as strong as they are without the situations and struggles I faced with my group at the ropes course. My Launch into Loras ropes course experience taught me new ways to use clear, effective communication, while stressing the importance of trust when building relationships.
