The poem “Likewise” by Langston Hughes is about Jews living and selling products in Harlem. But looking deeper into the writing reveals references to the creeping increase of antisemitism in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Lines 1-8 of the poem say that Jews sell “Groceries, Suits, Fruits, Watches, Diamond rings, THE DAILY NEWS” this hints that Jews owned the majority of the stores around New York, however, notice the “THE DAILY NEWS” is capitalized, this could be a reference to yellow journalism (commonly known now as sensationalized news) which ordinarily used capitalized and boldfaced titles to attract attention.
