Like Women Matter A feminist novel is one that supports the goal of equal rights for women. Like Water for Chocolate does not have the characteristics of a feminist novel, primarily due to the roles of characters Mama Elena and Pedro. In the novel Mama Elena treats her daughter as her personal servant which completely negates the beliefs of a feminist. A Tita's sister Rosaura also supports non-feminist qualities due to the fact she didn't even choose her own husband. Tita is completely in touch with her sexual feelings. We see this when she remains to have her feelings in tact with Pedro, against her mother's wishes. He finds Tita on her knees, grinding almonds and sesame seeds. Breasts move freely, sweat drips, sexual innuendos fly; they lock eyes for an intense moment. “They stayed in this amorous ecstasy until Pedro lowered his eyes and stared steadily at Tita’s breasts.” She also defies her controlling mother her tries to condemn her to her ranch, and this portrays more of her feminist qualities that could be shown throughout the book, but this book also shows real non-feminist qualities, such as her mother trying to force her to be her servant for her entire life. “ If he intends to ask for your hand, tell him not to bother. He’ll be wasting his time and mine too. You know perfectly well that being the youngest daughter means you have to take care of me until the day I die.” Mama Elena is not a feminist, as argued earlier on. Tita could be seen this way for her sexual realizations, but this could also be viewed as over sexualisation of the female body which is not feminist. In this book's entirety we can see that it is not feminist because it does not portray a feminist books definition throughout the story. We can see that in the examples mentioned early, and as you all know the book I am sure you can see it
