With this astonishing lack of feminism in society the world needs to allow it back in as how society functions, but before that will ever happen, the world needs to look at why it needs it, what it is which includes the stereotypes associated with it, and ending with the goals of women right’s activists. Without the feminist ideology present in culture, many people have suffered and continue to suffer. Over a century ago, the suffragette movement started and boys are still raised to believe that they are superior (“Society” 3). This is evident in the ways females are stereotyped, treated, and thought of. Many women get accused of being hysterical when trying to discuss issues relating to the unfairness (“Society” 2).
By living in a dark conservative society, Ruth also faces difficulties to sustain in the female role presses on her. She seems to get out of the system and tries to stand on her own. Avoiding social norms is tough and many times because of conservative repressive societal demands, but many women crave social change. Fern and Chopin portrayed their character to show us that not every woman can accepts their fate and suffers quietly. Many women rebel and come out from their prescribed social role.
Women in the 1970s began to challenge those established gender roles and deconstruct the engrained stereotypes of a male dominated society. According to the text “As more and more women took jobs, the importance of their paid work to the economy and their families belied the idea of women as dependent, domestic beings and awakened many women workers, especially labor union women, to the inferior conditions of their employment”( The American Promise2). From this excerpt we can analyze that women stepped over the perception that they were only useful for house hold duties and child rearing and actually took on the jobs that their husbands did. The women responsible for the enthusiastic alteration of policy reside in that of Esther Peterson, Betty Friedan, Pauli Murray, Mary King, Casey Hayden, as well as others very inspiring women. In regards to Esther Peterson, she was “Assistant Secretary of Labor... ... middle of paper ... ...on, it took the hard work of dedicated women to bring about a change in the American government when it came to sexual equality.
Introduction Since the beginning of time women have been considered inferior to men, which seem to proceed to affect everyday lives of all social beings in this world. Women have a disease, a disease that will prevent them for ever having the political drive to achieve political, social or economic opportunities men have. This "disease" is the need for independency and self-respect or the lack there of. This is what we have come to know as feminism. Feminism refers to the body of thought on the cause and nature of women's disadvantaged and subordinate position in society, and efforts to minimize and eliminate the subordination (Hughes, 2002:160).
“Feminism is both an intellectual commitment and a political movement that seeks justice for women and the end of sexism in all forms” (Baptiste). Just as in the past, feminism continues to act as a controversial issue among men and women. In the 1960’s, women finally addressed workplace inequity and created woman organizations to achieve equality. In the early 1960’s, the Equal Pay Act and the Civil Rights Act set a milestone for women’s progression towards work equality. Though women have made great leaps towards true equality, women still face many challenges and continue to be categorized as the subservient gender.
In the beginning on the story, the reader could question whether she was really that sick. Her husband, John, restricted her to one room in the house with a ugly mustard yellow wallpaper, which the wife hated. As the days continued, the hatred turn into a weird fascination, which turned into a madness that engulfed the narrator. Since the narrator was restricted only to her room, she didn’t have the luxury of society judging her and her actions; nevertheless, her behavior, if broadcasted to the public, would be harshly criticized. Readers can infer that the wife viewed herself as a confused woman who justed wanted to live a little.
Patriarchal societies suggest women’s body are property and their purpose is procreation. Women’s sexuality have been ignored in these societies and society has been ill informed. As women begin to represent themselves more in society, progress is made towards equality. Legislative changes will continue to be made such as in the past as women continue to persevere. These issues are significant worldwide, as women continue to fight for human rights internationally.
A crucial part of each women’s rights movement is the first-hand perspective from a female poet or author. They are the ones of can eloquently sum up the struggles they face every day. Sometimes these passionate and talented writers come from well-off families and homes yet still manage to tell a story of oppression. Inspiring words flow from women who have a constant distress with being misunderstood as a woman. The brave women who can break social standards and society’s norms are the leaders towards freedom for all women.
Women’s underrepresentation in politics has been an ongoing issue in the todays world. Feminism is one the main reasons women can get an education. However, with more women likely to be enrolled in college than men, there is still a continued underrepresentation of women in leadership roles throughout the society (McKenna 2007, 7). The inequality has lead women into stepping back and not considering much for themselves. There are many reasons behind the underrepresentation that women hold in politics.
Feminism has not changed today, but its focus has changed. Many women today have good education and employment opportunities just like men, as the early feminist fought for them. Now, after getting all these, men are now discriminating them and at times abusing them in order to undermine their hard work and potentiality. Men are doing all they can to undermine the success women have been able to acquired, however, today’s feminism is struggling to protect women and girls from domestic violence, sexual harassment, and rape as well as discrimination. Today, the feminist movement has grown and is still growing as women around the globe have joined hands in the fight against inequality.
