I found the standard categorization methods section very intriguing while reading chapter 4. I did not know about the different categories ranging from A to E. I found this to be a good way to differentiate different social classes, but I feel as if you are stereotyping people. Some people who may be rich may be more frugal with their money and spend their money on cheaper goods, rather then more expensive items. This may lead advertisers into the wrong direction when deciding their target markets. The life stages categorization method also was a tricky one to analyze. Social stratification is seen everywhere within the United States and around the world. As discussed in lecture, there are two types of stratification systems, and both are prominent in the United States. The first type is achievement based, which depends on a person’s wealth and accomplishments (Wadsworth). In the film, “People Like Us,” this system is presented. A teenage boy is embarrassed of his mother and his family’s social status, so he hides is social class from his friends. Social class can be measured unofficially by researchers or by using official scales that are government recognised. An example of an official scale is the Registrar Generals scale which was used in Britain from 1911 to 2000 and used by the government to measure social class. This model was split into two main classes, middle class and lower class. Each class was further divided into separate categories depending on how skilled the individual is. This system was relatively simple and easy to understand. However, the Registrar Generals scale was separated into classes based on the profession not the individual, meaning that individuals that were wealthy and lived off investments or inheritance would be excluded from this particular scale and not given a class position, this means it is not a clear picture of everyone’s position in society. Because the Registrar Generals scale measures occupation and does not take account of peoples own views of their class position, for example, someone with a middle class background may have a working class job but may not consider themselves as working
Erik Erikson developed the eight stages of life theory. Erikson’s theory focuses on the development from birth to death, social context, and interpersonal relations during each stage of life (McAdams, 2009). In the same manner, each stage of life is comprehendible in three levels, such as the body, ego, and family and culture. The eight stages of life are infancy (trust vs. mistrust), early childhood (autonomy vs. shame and doubt), childhood (initiative vs. guilt), childhood (industry vs. inferiority), adolescence and young adulthood (identity vs. role confusion), young adulthood (intimacy vs. isolation), mature adulthood (generativity vs. stagnation (or self-absorption)), and old age (ego integrity vs. despair).
In today’s society people are viewed as being in different classes depending on how much money they bring in. The categorization of people is known as classism. Classism is simply the prejudice or in favor of people belonging to a particular social class. Classism is known as one of the largest social problems plaguing the world today. Classes are formed according to how the rules of the following institutions; government regulations and economic status. It is held in place by a system of beliefs and cultural attitudes that ranks people according to their; economic status, family lineage, job status, and level of education. There are three major classifications to which people are titled. They include upper or high class which includes the people with the most money. The middle class who includes the people that brings home the average income. Finally, the class titled the lower class that includes the people who have only one income coming in or none at all (“What Is Classism.”). In the classrooms these classes still remain and the students within each class have different ways in which they learn, and view schooling. We as educators have to look passed their ways and address each class the same.
Erik Erikson viewed socioemotional development as the challenges that we faced throughout life and he also created the eight stages of socioemotional development: infancy, toddlerhood preschool, preadolescence, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, and old age to explain how we go through life (Macionis, 2017).
