Pi's Connection with the Christian Religion The journey, Pi goes through in Yann Martel's book, Life of Pi, helps him live in the moment and connect with the Christian religion on a more realistic level. “The central belief in Christianity is that Jesus is the son of God and the savior of humankind. By believing in Jesus’s death and Resurrection, people can be saved. Christianity is founded on the ideas of personal salvation and eternal life for its followers” (“Christianity”). Pi is trapped on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean. The religious beliefs Pi has about Christianity are crucial to his survival. By believing in the Christian religion, it gives Pi something to live for, it gives Pi hope.
“In Christianity, it was Jesus Christ and his ultimate sacrifice that appealed to Pi” (Martell). At various times the Christian religion gave Pi hope for survival. But at other times the only thing that kept Pi moving forward with his everyday activities was that he was sacrificing himself for Richard Parker (the tiger). This quote explains the Christian religion and the book Life of Pi perfectly. Pi was lost in a moment when the ship sank, and was found in a moment when the lifeboat hit the shore. But on a more realistic level Pi was saved in a moment, when he found the Christian religion. Pi was saved because he had something to believe in after death. If Pi didn’t have something to hope for than wouldn’t have been as worried about the moment he was living in. Pi understood that there was life after death, which allowed him to give everything that he had to live in the moment.
