How does Benigni convey that love provides hope in the movie, Life is Beautiful
The Academy Award winning movie, Life is Beautiful, is an inspiring and wonderful movie, directed by and starring the wonderful Roberto Benigni. Life is Beautiful is an inspirational movie about a Jewish-Italian waiter, Guido, who falls in love with the kind and beautiful Dora. They become married and conceive a boy whom they name Giosue. Years later, as the explosion of war came into the picture of their family, Guido and Dora must survive their separate ways at a concentration camp. At the same time Guido tries to make-believe a game for Giosue to still have a good childhood in the concentration camp. Through this terrible time Guido still tried to take care of his family by giving them hope through love.

Guido and Joshua had an idea to talk to Dora through a loudspeaker telling her about the dream Guido had about going to the movies with her in a beautiful dress. Giosue also told her about how much fun he had ‘playing a game’ with Guido. Through this scene, Benigni first portrayed the setting, reminding the audience where Guido was at the same time he presented the loudspeaker to tell the audience that it is there. To finish the scene, Benigni used a headshot to help the audience see what Dora is truly feeling in her facial expression. You can also see that the other women in the headshot are blurred out to create a stronger concentration on Dora. From this headshot you can see Dora overwhelmed. The film Jindabyne, is a story about death, marriage, and race in an Australian town in New South Wales called Jindabyne. In the film, four men go fishing, and one of them discovers the dead body of a young indigenous girl. Instead of reporting what they found to the police immediately, they decide to stay and continue fishing. They decide that there is nothing they could do for her, so they tie her legs to a tree and continue with their fishing, reporting the death only when they return home. After they are done with their weekend of fishing and report the incident, conflict starts, as the men are criticized for not respecting the dead. Through the story of the town’s reaction to the four fishermen’s response to the dead girl, the movie shows Australia to be fragmented and divided over white-indigenous relations.
Lee Daniel’s Precious is a movie centered around Precious Jones, a 16-year-old overweight black girl living in Harlem, New York. The movie begins when she is in public school pregnant with her second child by her father. Because Precious is pregnant, the principle recommends an alternative school for her. At home, Precious is a servant to her mother, Mary, who is physically, emotionally, verbally, and sexually abusing her. Mary constantly tells Precious that she is not good enough and that no one will ever want her. At times of distress, Precious tends to dissociate and fantasize about another life where she is a blonde white girl. She wants to be famous and loved by all. Precious arrives at the alternative school hardly knowing how to read or write. She gets placed in a class of girls with a dedicated teacher, Ms. Rain. Many elements of the film Life is Beautiful can compare to the Bible. For example, Guido, the main character, acts as a Christ figure in that he saves his son, Joshua from the evils of the Holocaust. Another example that compares with the Bible is the tank that is promised to Joshua. Finally, Guido’s death eventually saves Joshua from his own death. Such examples in the movie are comparable to examples in the Bible.
This film also shows that people of different backgrounds can too be in love. This movie illustrates that even though there are differences between two people, doesn’t mean they cannot be together. In the world today, people of all different types are falling in love. This used to be unheard of, but is now becoming a way of life. I feel that this movie did a wonderful job of showing many aspects of love and the difficulties that people may come upon.
Beloved is a movie full of pain, love, and triumph. This film is constructed and created from the works of Toni Morrison’s novel. Beloved can be considered a ghost tale based on how the main character Beloved magically appears and disappears with no warning signs. I have chosen to review the film Boyhood written by Richard Linklater that took twelve years to film. In the movie Boyhood, it illustrates the life of a boy named Mason Jr. through the many stages of his childhood to adolescence to becoming an adult. at the beginning of the Movie LIfe Is Beautiful, Guido seems naive but as he is forced to come to terms with the reality of his family's seemingly uncontrollable situation, his views shift and his character changes.Guido cares immensely about the well being of his family and their happiness. Seeing the pain that others are going through, being separated from his wife and not knowing whats to come makes this is an extra difficult experience for him. For my second media critique, I chose to focus on the 2011 film Bridesmaids. Bridesmaids is a comedy written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, directed by Paul Feig. With grossing almost $300 million worldwide, 44 nominations, and 11 awards won, Bridesmaids has been a relevant film in popular culture over the last three years (“Bridesmaids”).
