Many LGBTQ homeless youth develop negative side effects from living on the street without support. LGBTQ youth that live on the street is faced with a little more challenges than homeless heterosexuals youth (GNOF). Family rejection puts LGBTQ homeless on the street without support, which causes them to practice survival crimes such as trading sex for food or money (BreakOut). Survival crimes such as trading sex can have many negatives problems that comes with it, such as an increase in diseases inside the community of being incarcerated by the police. Many LGBTQ homeless youth steal food to survive and then go to jail for a crime just so that they can survive (BreakOut). Without the support of their love ones, many LGBTQ youth turns to substance abuse with leads to jail time and puts them into the criminal justice system (Wes Ware). …show more content…

This increase the chance of HIV and other se sexually transmitted diseases in the LGBTQ community because the same study from above shows that 73% of drug users sometimes share the same needle because of the lack of getting a hold of clean needles ( Human Rights Watch). Many youth turns to drug to cope with being homeless (Homeless youth and crime: What does the research say). 24% of transgender women gets harassed by the police for having condoms, which causes them to decrease their use of condoms out of fear of being arrested (Human Rights Watch). The decrease in use of condoms out of fear of harassment is also a major factor of increased diseases going around in the LGBTQ community. The Human Rights Watch has many accounts of transgender women in New Orleans being harassed by the police for having condoms in their purse or with them.
