Letter Analysis about Human Population Growth
The world we live in is encountering a problem that affects all of its residents, from Australians to Alaskans, and everyone in between. I am writing this analysis in regards to a letter I received addressing Earth's population growth problem. This letter directed my attention to a situation of global proportions and with devastating potential. This situation that I speak of is unchecked exponential population growth. I am confident that we will be able combat this problem effectively with the intervention of our government through the implementation of tax incentives and the power of knowledge through education.
To effectively combat the problem of out of control population growth we must first know the facts on the subject. Our earth is adding 100 million people a year to our population- a million people every three days, 250 every minute. The country of India had a population of 853 million in 1996; by the year 2020 is will have a population over 1.4 billion (Raven, Johnson 476). These numbers alone should trigger immediate action from our leaders. Figures like the ones above are primarily due to a couple key factors. The first, decreased mortality rates due to advancements in medicine. In the last 300 years the death rate has fallen from 29 per 1000 per year to 13 per 1000 per year (Raven, Johnson 474). The other key factor that is affecting population growth is major advancements in technology and agriculture. Advancements in these fields allow us to feed and house more and more people comfortably. While these advancements sound beneficial to all, they are quickly overwhelming our limited or scarce resources. An example of this would be California's central valley and the depleting of its ground water tables. Increased suburban sprawl accompanied by increased need for agricultural products is depleting the ground water tables faster than nature can replenish them. This problem affects not only Californians, but also everyone who depends on their agriculture for day-to-day nourishment.
Many ideas have been experimented with the world to combat the problem of population growth. I would like to take a couple ideas from each of these experiments, combine them, and implement them into our society immediately. First I would like to start by urging the government to begin a campaign of education regarding the population situation.
Garret Hardin’s “Tragedy of the Commons” is an article that identifies the nation’s current problems and predicaments that can’t be resolved through the use of technical solutions. Hardin’s work heavily focuses on overpopulation, a prominent and unceasing issue that significantly distorts and affects the stability of the Earth and the abundance of the planet’s resources. In his article, he mentioned some reasonable and important solutions to overpopulation, but he also explained its downside and how the said solutions may not be ideal and practical. “Tragedy of the Commons” revealed that the human population will continue to flourish and how it will be greatly detrimental to our society unless individuals get the education that they need and
In unit 3 we learned about sustainability, our ecological footprints, oil resources as well as trade. The sustainability dilemma is divided into three sections that each show a way the earth is struggling to sustain us. When studying population, we learned that the global population is slowing down, but will continue to increase for at least thirty years. Furthermore, in unit 4 we learned about population change. When studying exponential growth, we learned the United Nation has three predictions for the future global population. These predictions include our population increasing rapidly, decreasing rapidly and stabilizing. These two ideas are connected because they both explore the future of our population. The diagram represents
Population continues to grow and is expected to reach an all time high in future years. There are tons of different reasons for why population is rising so quickly. In document d, it says, "Every second 5 people are born and 2 people die, a net gain of 3 people. This fact from document d shows one reason why population growth is at all time high. Document d, also states "At this rate, the world population will double every 40 years and would be 12 billion in 40 years, 24 billion in 80 years, and more than 48 billion in 120 years." This will create tons of difficulties, like the amount of food and supplies needed for the world, which will make it nearly impossible for supplies to keep pace with the population growth. Document a shows
There are many solutions to solve this problem. For example we could adopt a worldwide "one child" policy. This is a solution that China's government has instituted to control the population in there country. In this policy a couple is only allowed to have one child. If the couple has more than one child, they are faced with a stiff fine, which most can't afford, and if they can't afford it the baby is forcibly aborted. This can be taken a step further by only allowing couples who met a certain criteria such as: an above average combined IQ, good genes, or a substantial amount of wealth to produce offspring. This would not only benefit the prevention of overpopulation but also improve the human race as a whole. According to world-renowned scientist Charles Darwin when only the fittest and best examples from a population are allowed to breed, the species will rapidly evolve to become greater than it ever
Briefly describe the factors that lead to population growth and potential stabilization. How does human demographics influence population dynamics in more and less developed nations and what might this mean for future population and economic growth? What do you see as the pros and cons of a large human population (brief)? Are there too many or too few people? Why do you think this?
In, The Population Bomb by, Paul R Ehrlich, he explains the problem of population increase, and how there are people everywhere! The feeling of feeling over populated. He talks about how if there are more people then there is more food that needs to be produced then ate. He explains on the rich people becoming wealthier and the poor are going to be even poorer and there is going to be a starvation. Population is doubling every year and how our energy is turning into
...ing the birth control for both men and women and education centers to teach safe and protected sex. So I want to make sure that there are proper barriers so that the population can decrease in becoming over populated. Next I want to make sure that there are centers so that mothers can properly care for their young children. So bring in those centers as well. I hope with the information provided and the strategic plan to fix it will hopefully bring awareness to this astonishing problem.
The human population growth rate is an alarming issue that brings with it irreversible consequences, that will likely effect the way of life for future generations to come. With the serious incline in population statistics comes catastrophic processes such as global warming and deforestation that have major ‘knock on’ ramifications. It’s issues such as these that need to be considered when we think about the growth of the human population, and we must take into account why these issues are occurring. We must also explore the options available to us that may assist in limiting the problems, or eliminating them all together, to provide a better place, not only for us in existence now, but also those who will walk this earth in the future decades and centuries to come.
Human population growth was relatively slow for most of human history. Within the past 500 years, however, the advances made in the industrial, transportation, economic, medical, and agricultural revolutions have helped foster an exponential, "J-shaped" rise in human population (Southwick, Figure 15.1, p. 160). The statistics associated with this type of growth are particularly striking: "Human beings took more than 3 million years to reach a population of 1 billion people...The second billion came in only 130 years, the third billion in 30 years, the fourth billion in 15 years, the fifth billion in 12 years..." (Southwick, p. 159). As human population has grown, there has been simultaneous growth within the industrial sector. Both of these increases have greatly contributed to environmental problems, such as natural resource depletion, ecosystem destruction, and global climate change. Also linked with the increasing human population are many social problems, such as poverty and disease. These issues need to be addressed by policy makers in the near future in order to ensure the survival and sustainability of human life.
Since the beginning of mankind, we have reached many great achievements. We have developed many technologies and theories to solve and explain many of our questions and to improve human life. Through our years of evolution, we have severely increased our own survivability. This has been a great achievement for us, but in the recent decade, overpopulation is becoming a great issue. In the recent years, the rapid increase in population growth has troubled many in the field of political sciences. Scientists like Ehrlich have calculated and expected our population to grow even faster if we do not act upon the increasing rate of population growth. The birth rate of our planet is increasing exponentially, meaning that the birth rate has surpassed the death rate and that the rate of growth will only increase if left alone. The politics of population is a debate that involves both the fields of sciences and moral and ethical considerations. Science may provide an insight of
Human population growth is becoming a huge issue in our world today. The population is increasing rapidly. The reason that it is becoming a concern is because it has affected the economic, environmental, and social aspects of our world. In the film Frontline: Heat, we can see how there might not be a future for our planet unless we are able to reduce the emissions and make our world a safe place. Not only for the present but also for future generations so that they are able to live long and healthy lives.
Overpopulation is a growing problem all over the world. This is a very important environmental issue and needs to be dealt with. This environmental problem is affecting many countries around the world, but mostly the poor and impoverished countries that don’t have the resources to help deal with these issues. It also affects the environment like plants, animal life and air quality. When the population of people expands we need more natural resources from the environment, so we consume more than we can produce.
Our world is too small for our ever-risingly growing population. One day, resources will run dry and vanish, which will bring death and loss to all nations on this planet. Many researchers and scientists have confirmed that the population will reach 10 billion by the end of the century and will continue to stream upward. There are many different ways of trying to decrease population, contain global warming and assist our environmental changes. The only way to succeed, families must be the regulators of their fertility and future.
One of the problems facing our world is population. It began about ten thousand years ago when the humans settled and began farming. The farming provides more food for the people thus making the population grow. Now we are about 6 billion in population and in a few years we will be around 10 to 11 billion. Therefore, our population will almost double in size. This means that we will need more food to support us. A study in 1986 by Peter Vitonesk, a Stanford biologist, showed that the humans are already consuming about 38.8 of what is possible for us to eat. Thus, if the population keeps increasing, the percentage will increase also, making us closer and closer to the biophysical limits. By studying the earth's capacity, Dr. Cornell, another biologist, believes that we are already crowded for this would. He believes that our world can only support two million people. Not only this, but population can cause complicated problems to the countries with very high population. These countries will need more schools to educate its people, they will need more hospitals and public health to take care of their people, and they will need more water and more soil for farming to feed all the people. In order to solve the population growth problem, the people should be educated. Once the people are educated they will be aware of the problems they ca...
As the population is growing at an alarming exponential rate, more and more of our younger generations, soon to be future problem solvers of our society, are more aware of this and the possible damaging effects it will have.
