A Critique of “Let Chick-fil-A Fly Free” In the article, “Let Chick-fil-A Fly Free” Steve Salbu, gives his opinion about the controversial statements against same sex marriage by the president of the restaurant chain, Dan Cathy. Cathy stated that “the business is family owned and family led and very supportive of the family in the Biblical definition” and his belief that if he were to support it with his business he would anger God. Salbu as a gay man is naturally upset with the comment and feels “family’ is something that has been earned by the gay community, but stands by his belief that to “truly respect individual freedom, he must also respect Mr. Cathy’s”. He feels that it has been earned through the years of oppression and is “treasured and sacred” to the people who have obtained it. Salbu holds the opinion that it is as valid as the Biblical definition that Mr. Cathy uses in his personal and business policies. Salbu holds a valid point that family can have many meanings. Through the years there have been all types of families and it can stand to mean anyone whom you choose to include in your life. He defends his position that in order to have true freedom, the opinions of everyone must be respected even if they differ from your own. Each person has the right to choice whom they call love and call family. He makes the point that if you disagree with the homosexual life style, then you have the power to make the choice not to enter into that type of relationship. Just as with the choice to support or not to support Chick-Fil-A. He contends that if you agree with the statements of Mr. Cathy, that is your right to do so and you will support his business and no one should be able to subjugate that right.
