My personal mental health is a critical role in why counseling is important to me. I have struggled with Major Depression and Anxiety since I was fifteen years old. I have been in counseling for ten years and only recently decided to combine psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. I cannot imagine my life without my support system. I want to be that support system for others when they have no one to turn to, since I know how it feels. I have a need to help others and give back to the community.

When a counselor self discloses information to a client it needs to be information that provides a beneficial purpose. Studies show the most common self-disclosure topics are personal theoretical approaches, beliefs about treatment, statements of respect for client, similar emotions, and coping strategies (Ziv-Beiman, 2013). It is important counselors do not disclose too much personal information or irrelevant information to the client. One of the problems that arise when a counselor provides inappropriate information is the reversal of roles. There needs to be set boundaries between the counselor and the client in order for the therapeutic process to be successful.
I need to learn to become firm and persistent about my boundaries I expect to be followed. If boundaries are tested with my clients I will explain to them the importance of the therapeutic relationship. I am a firm believer in self-disclosure. I believe it is a way for clients to feel comfortable and express themselves freely. It is important when self-disclosing to only speak freely about ones experiences when it will benefit the client.
