Another key reason that it's more likely that after the end of the story in the novel, Laura and Howie will remain close friends (or even a couple) for many years is that Laura and Howie keep eachother safe. When Howie and Laura were in the dining hall at the new camp. Howie kicks Pardoe when he was harassing Laura (100). And as well when Laura was inside the cottage and Howie was outside the cottage (6). The point is it shows how they both care about each other and want to keep eachother safe.
