Siberian tigers are the largest cats in the world,at an average of 11 feet long. There tail lengths even are an average of 3 feet long. Males are usually around 700 pounds while females are more around 400 pounds. On average, they are the largest species of tiger based on weight and length. They have large feet with 5 toes on their front feet and 4 on their hind. Their claws are long and retractable being up to 3.9 inches in length. They are also some of the most endangered. There is only an estimated 400 to 500 Siberian (or Amur) tigers in the wild today. When it comes to their habitats, siberian tigers are solitary animals, marking their scent on trees to keep other tigers away. Siberian tigers live primarily in eastern Russia's birch forests, though some exist in China and North Korea. The reason that these tigers are endangered is because their homes in the woods, are being destroyed. It doesn’t help that people are hunting these tigers illegally either. Over the last hundred years, these hunters and the forest destruction have reduced overall tiger populations from hundreds of thousands to perhaps 3,000 to 5,000. Most of the siberian tigers that are left are in some sort of captivity, such as zoos or special parks where they are protected, but can still roam and be free. The tigers in the actual wild, can have territories that are 210 - 618 square miles. Male Tigers have territories that are much larger and they will be connected to the smaller territories of several females. The size of a Tiger's territory is dependent on the available resources and the largest territories belong to Siberian Tigers.Tigers defend their territory strongly and will fight any strange tiger that strays within their range. Amazingly a tigers r... ... middle of paper ... ...s, fires, or droughts or human activities. The characteristics of a siberian tiger are quite unique. Their skulls are characterized by their large size. It is similar to the skull of a lion although it is different in the way of how the jaw is shaped. The jaw muscles are attached directly to the top of the skull, on the sagittal crest. The bottom jaw can only move up and down, not from side to side. This ensures that the jaw is as strong as it possibly could be ,which is ideal for its purpose in the tiger’s life such as taking down prey and tearing it apart. In siberian tigers the facial region is very powerful and broad around the canines. The size of skulls of a male siberian tiger ranges around 13 to 15 inches. The size of a females skull ranges from about 11 to 12 inches. A females skull is always smaller than a males and never as heavily built as a males.
There I was, standing face to face with the bobtailed lynx. It was looking right at me and licking its chops with delight. It seemed as if the beast was thinking "Lunch" on this cold, gray December day, but I wasn't worried about being attacked. The reason for this was the fact that this was a domestic lynx that just happened to be on the other side of a stout metal cage, so there was no chance of the lynx getting a hold of me.
Paleontologist L.B. Tarlo said that it was very difficult to ascertain the length of Liopleurodon. This was so because no complete skeleton was found. He then predicted from the skull, the skull was approximately one-seventh of the total length of the body. When we apply this ratio to the largest skull specimen of L. ferox, the total length of the body comes out to be a little more than 10 meters. The normal size from this calculation would be around 5-7 meters in length. The weight of it was estimated to be around between 75 to 150 tons. The more recent study and the finding of the complete skull of Liopleurodon. It showed the total size of the body was actually five times more the length of the skull. Thus, reducing the expected body size of it furthermore. The maximum size that a L. ferox could reach is just up to 6.4
They can weigh up to 100lbs, and grow to be 4ft long and 2ft tall! They have short, stubby legs. Their feet are webbed, which makes them excellent swimmers. They need these webbed feet to get away from their many predators such as wildcats and eagles. They have big front teeth as most rodents do. Fur on a capybara can range from red, brown, or gray. Altogether it makes them kinda look like furry pigs!
The characteristics of the grizzly bear as a top predator also make it highly vulnerable to threats. Although it is an omnivore, because it relies heavily on salmon to make it through the winter, it is vulnerable to anything that impacts on salmon runs. It needs wide-ranging habitat and is slow to reproduce. As such, grizzly bears are considered not just a key species but also an ‘umbrella species’ because the protection of their habitats will result in an ‘umbrella of protection’ for a wide range of other species. The protected areas that have been set aside in the Great Bear Rainforest are not enough to sustain healthy populations of grizzly bear so it requires additional habitat set aside from logging. Trophy hunting of grizzly bears also continues to place their population at
Jaguars are part of exclusive group known as the “big cats,” which include the lion, tiger, and panther. The scientific name for this species is Panthera Onca. Panthera is a Greek term originating from the Latin word for panther while Onca is derived from the Latin word for lynx. Most Central and South American countries refer to the Jaguar as “el tigre” or the tiger. This is the only big cat found in the New World (western hemisphere) and the only one in the entire genus. The entire taxonomy classification is as follows: Kingdom- Animalia, Phylum- Chordata, Class- Mammalia, Order- Carnivora, Family- Felidae, Genus- Panthera, Species- Panthera Onca.
Like tigers, snow leopards tend to be solitary animals and are apex predators. Their niche in the wild includes ambushing their prey for their meals, however, these cats are not as big as lions or tigers, so their prey tend to be on the smaller size. Examples of what they usually hunt would be sheep’s, boars, deer’s, and rodents. Snow leopards are usually found in mountain areas, their range is specifically near Central Asia to the Himalayas. These cats also travel as high as 18,400 feet which is a bit more than the half way mark in comparison to the height of Mount Everest. With the ability to thrive in great heights in the mountain, this increases their chances to find more prey, however, most of the time harsh conditions force the snow leopards back down to the forests. In order to keep a healthy population, snow leopards usually take up to thirty eight square miles as his/her territory.
and 95 centimeters (29 and 37 inches); tail length add another 5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches) , with males having longer tails.
The adult tigers suffer from abuse causing them to pace back and forth and to have self mutilation because their natural needs are not met. The temple also keeps their tigers captive. They spend most of their lives confined to barren concrete cells and chained to a small cage for several hours a day given no shade. When the tigers are allowed out, it is only because of the money. When the tigers refuse to cooperate the monks will beat the
Lions have relatively short-legged, long, muscular bodies and large heads. The male grows on average to 1.7 to 2.5 m (5.6 to 8.2 ft) long, not including the tail, which is 90 to 105 cm (36 to 41 in) in length. It stands 1.23 m (4 ft) high at the shoulder, and it weighs 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lb). The mane, which covers the head and neck, sometimes extends to the shoulders and belly. The mane will vary in color and length; well-fed, healthy lions have longer, fuller manes. Females are smaller but equally muscular. Lions vary in color from golden to brown. The mane of a male lion will vary from black to yellow. Both sexes have retractable claws to keep them sharp when they are needed. Lions have wide powerful jaws. The lions roar, which can be heard by humans up to 9 (5.6 miles) kilometers away, is usually uttered before the animals hunt in the evening, after a successful hunt, and again in the early morning.

While in transit, animals are confined in boxcars, trailers and trucks. During transit, tigers do not have access to food, water, and veterinary care. They are forced to live in tiny, cramped cages, no bigger than them. The cages remain chained in arena basements or parking lots. Since they are forced to live in cages, they are also forced to eat, drink, sleep, defecate and urinate in the same place. The tigers don’t receive any exercise besides, when they perform. This reason is because they are held captive. Captive results in the tigers being overweight, while the others suffer from psychological damage. The unnatural environment causes them to pace back and forth and sometimes mutilate themselves. According to PETA (n.d) in the article “6 BIG Reasons Why Big Cats Don’t Belong in Circuses,” “Tigers are naturally semi-nocturnal and love the water” (para.4). Semi-nocturnal means animals sleep during the day and are active during the nighttime. In the circus, the tigers are forced to perform during the day and they are not allowed to sleep when they want to. Tiger also love water, but they are not given access to any type of watering hole. In the wild, tigers grow up with their mothers, but the Ringling Brothers keep the tigers separated long before causing them to have emotional distress for both the mothers and
What it looks like: Siberian tiger is the largest and most rare of all members of the cat family. This cat is 8-10 feet long, excluding their 25-38 inch rattling tail. This species of tiger weighs 400-700 pounds. Like all members of the tiger family, males are significantly larger than females.
This provides a legal safety net to stop and slow down the loss of plant and animal species. They hold federal agencies and others accountable for complying with laws protecting rare/endangered animals using persuasion and cooperation. They recommend increased funding for private landowners and conservation programs that could benefit animals. They protect and restore habitats that were lost. NWF also reduces threats to wildlife that can lead to endangerment including loss of habitat and pollution. India is now halting tiger tourism to prevent extinction of the animals. About 1,411 of these animals live in the wild, and they are in danger of being “loved to death.” Experts fear these big cats will become extinct in only five years. Poaching is the main reason for many deaths, but tourism has also impacted the tigers. The tourist vehicles drive away the tigers prey and hotels have been built over passageways the tigers used to travel from one place to another. Alligators, Bald Eagles, Wolves, Grizzly Bears, and Whooping Cranes were all saved by the U.S Endangered Species Act (ESA). The WWF is addressing the major threats to Australia’s
