With becoming a part of a union there are many benefits. Some benefits are better wages, more job security, better healthcare coverage, cheaper health care coverage, more experienced people get bettering opportunities first. Unions can help lower and middle waged workers by increasing their pay. Increasing their pay gives them a little more of a cushion and makes the cost of living not be so stressful. With this comes rules that will later be discussed in the cons of being in a labor union. With a non unionized company, people can be fired at will. This means that the employer can just let a worker go for any reason at any point in time. This also includes when times get slow and layoffs are happening. A grievance procedure provides a hierarchical structure for presenting and settling workplace disputes. With this in mind as an employee you will be able to voice your opinion without having to worry about being fired as easily compared to a non unionized workplace. As stated before there is a procedure before being terminated. Being in a union also provides the workers together with more power than just individuals of the company. You can compare it to a majority vote. As we all know health care is very expensive. Unions are able to pick up the slack and provide covering more of the health care costs. Instead of premiums coming out of your own pocket your employer will pay for most of your premiums. Along with better healthcare, the more experienced people in the workplace will get the opportunity to get promotions first. You will not have a new person that gets a job that is higher up on the pay grade than you. With you putting time into the company you will be rewarded by these opportunities.
