The author, Julia Alvarez uses language and literary devices to depict the Mirabal sisters; Patria, Maria Teresa, Dede, and Minerva as martyrs under the dictatorship of Trujillo. For example, In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, in the scene where the SIM destroyed Pedrito’s family’s rancho and arrested both Nelson and Pedrito, Patria screamed out “‘I’ve been good! I’ve been good!’ to the sky” (p.161). This shows that Patria’s sufferings resulted in the SIM destroying everything that she owned; her house, valuables, faith and both her son and husband. This creates the feeling of the martyr suffering both emotional and physical pain by sacrificing the main points that made up her “life”. Here, the author’s use of parallel structure shows how hurt Patria is by using “good” to emphasize how unfair it was for God to punish Patria and her family.
