“The Case for Contamination” by Kwame Anthony Appiah addresses the issue of globalization and cultural change. The journalist expresses his views on globalization via examples throughout the article. He emphasizes on the positive aspects of the changes within all cultures. However, he does touch base on how the United States and other countries has made preserving culture very difficult for the people in Ghana and those countries who have chosen to stick to their old ways. The author suggests that isolating the country from globalization in order to preserve and maintain the cultures away from other countries is not in the best interest of that culture. The problem is not to isolate the country from change, but rather promote it for people to learn about the culture and find a way to adapt it towards globalization to preserve it without changing the culture entirely. This in turn provides organizations to gain greater numbers of products, services and consumers. In contrast, globalization can negatively impact cultural diversity including the way of life of a country. Over the years, through social media we find that more and more people are choosing a different way of life compared to what their culture has taught them. This is due to the changes on the views of the world. “Nowadays, everything is different…And there are new possibilities for the young in the towns, in other parts of the country and in other parts of the world.” (Appiah, 2006) Our world is practically built on the concept of cultural imperialism, it is centralizing in the views of United States and Europe.
