“We are on this earth to fart around, don't let anyone tell you different.” This quote by Kurt Vonnegut, an influential author, describes his writing and attitude towards life perfectly. Vonnegut’s literary style was very creative, with a hint of gothic qualities. Vonnegut was an American author from the 1950s, however his amazing works have held their popularity into the 2000s. Kurt Vonnegut’s exposure to the cruelty of war caused him to write in such a way that invited his readers to see the world through his eyes, earning more recognition than awards, Vonnegut impacted the minds of many through his short story, “2BR02B”.
Kurt Vonnegut Jr. was born on November 11th, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Vonnegut developed his passion for writing while he attended Shortridge High School and wrote for his school newspaper. After graduating from high school, Vonnegut attended Cornell University, then quickly decided to enlist in the US Air Force in 1943. After he enlisted in the war, the army sent him to Carnegie Mellon University to pursue a degree in engineering. Kurt Vonnegut is an outstanding author who addresses problems he has with others in very concentrated ways. The disrespect of his book Slaughterhouse-Five at Drake High School by principal Charles McCarthy caused Vonnegut to assert his opinion on the situation. The school did not like the unappealing style of Vonnegut's writing resulting in the destruction of all his books by fire. Vonnegut uses rhetorical strategies such as anaphora, didactic, and invective language portraying his message to never judge a book by it's cover, all writers have the right to express their opinion.

Kurt Vonnegut’s fictional novel “Cat’s Cradle”, indirectly explores issues that parallels into topics such as religion, scientific/technological advancements, political power and much more. Vonnegut’s novel is narrated by a character named Jonah (John). He, Jonah, sets out to write an anthropological book based off of what key people were doing on the day that the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. One can only imagine the intense emotional scarring that one would suffer after exiting an underground shelter with a dozen other men to find a city destroyed and its people dead, corpses laying all around. These feelings are what prompted Kurt Vonnegut to write Slaughterhouse-Five as he did. The main character of this novel mirrors the author in many ways, but the striking similarity is their inability to deal with the events of Dresden on the night of February 13, 1945. How should we react to the horrors of war, heartache, and famine? Do we try to solve our problems all at once, or do we sit back and watch things fall apart? Kurt Vonnegut has an interesting idea of what to do, as is shown in his novel, Slaughter House Five. Vonnegut's prescription for dealing with the tragic absurdity of the twentieth century is to simply not deal with it. In his novel, Vonnegut shows that he is more inclined to sit back and watch than to let things affect him.

It is with such irony and paradox that Vonnegut himself describes his work as "poisoning minds with humanity...to encourage them to make a better world" (The Vonnegut Statement 107). In Cat's Cradle, Vonnegut does not tie his co-mingled plots into easy to digest bites as the short chapter structure of his story implies. Rather, he implores his reader to resolve the paradoxes and ironies of Cat's Cradle by simply allowing them to exist. By drawing our attention to the paradoxical nature of life, Vonnegut releases the reader from the necessity of creating meaning into a realm of infinite possibility. It appears that Vonnegut sees the impulse toward making a better world as fundamental to the human spirit; that when the obstacle of meaning is removed the reader, he supposes, will naturally improve the world.
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. was born on November 11, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Kurt Vonnegut, Sr. and Edith Lieber Vonnegut. He had an older brother named Bernard and an older sister named Alice. Kurt, Sr. was a well-known architect in the city and Edith was the daughter of a wealthy local family. The Vonneguts had been in Indianapolis for several generations, and were well-off, respected members of the community. Unlike the characters in most of his books, Vonnegut's early childhood was extremely privileged. It wasn't until the stock market crash of 1929 that he experienced the type of life that he would go on to write about in the future: the middle Middle Class.

The narrator's observations and the events occurring during the novel reflect a dark view of humanity which can only be mocked by humor. At the beginning of the novel the narrator is researching for a book he is writing. The book was to be about the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and the lives of the people who created the bomb. The narrator travels through the plot of the story, with characters flying in and out, in almost a daze. He is involved in events which are helplessly beyond his control, but which are inevitably leading to a destination at the end.

Imagine a society where overpopulation has been cured, people do not age and people do not get sick. Well, this is the exact kind of Utopia that Kurt Vonnegut has created in “2BR02B”. Although, for every one baby born, one person must willingly die. This short story was written in 1962, where concern over population growth increased greatly. Society’s concerns played a big part in the writing of this story.
Overpopulation is a looming issue. Equality is scarily equal. The end of the world is nigh. In a career of over fifty years, Kurt Vonnegut has written three short story collections full of science fiction and dystopian scenarios. Through these short stories, he creates imagined, futuristic societies that hyperbolize flaws of modern day society.
