The act of cheating is the social issue identified in this essay. Cheating was the core plot of “The Kugelmass Episode”, by Alan Konisberg. Cheating itself can be defined as an emotional affair between two individuals. Cheating in relationships is done for different reasons and is not limited to the male or female in a relationship. Cheating is defined as infidelity, emotional affair and adultery(Meyer). Cheating may be carried out in many ways in our current era of living. In “The Kuglemass Episode” Syndene states, “I’m a man who needs romance. I need softness, I need flirtation“(Kronisberg). From this statement it is obvious to tell that Syndene does not care to have a relationship of love but more a relationship of sexual and flirtatious desire. He cheated on his wife because as described in the book he finds her oaf like and unappealing. This again gives an example of how the cheating was done out of sexual desire. The reasons for cheating differ with men searching for more sex or attention and women looking to fill an emotional void (Tammy). This shows that not all relationships ore built upon sexual desire alone, an emotional connection is also required to have a successful relationship. It my be inferred that Syndene kept his wife happy emotionally but she did not keep his sexually satisfied. By leaving Syndene sexually dissatisfied, he was inclined to find a new outlet for sexual satisfaction. This lust Syndene was driven by eventually lead him to being trapped forever inside a grammar book. Although his wife never found out about the cheating this would be considered his punishment for cheating on his
