The two countries conflicting ideals would eventually lead to the Korean War. The Korean War was the first battle leading to the Cold War. Not to mention it was the first grand proxy war fought between the United States and a Soviet communist supported enemy. “A proxy war is two opposing countries avoiding direct war, and instead supporting combatants that serve their interests. In some occasions, one country is a direct combatant whilst the other supporting its enemy.” (Wikipedia) Some examples of a proxy war include the Vietnam War and the Egyptian-Ottoman War. Once the U.S. had been called to action they joined the war in a matter of days using all their military power to help put a stop to North Koreas advancements. Because of U.S. involvement soon South Korea was beginning to be successful in pushing North Korean forces toward their shared border with China. In November and December 1951, thousands of Chinese troops began to slaughter many American and South Korea forces pushing them back over the 38th parallel. The Korean war eventually turned into a political stunt as the presidential elections were going on at the time as well. Republican candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower criticized President Truman’s way of handling the United States involvement in the war. In the end Eisenhower did end up winning the election and he promised the people that the U.S. would pursue further into the war. President Eisenhower started to make suggestions of the United States using nuclear weapons to stop the current pull and tug that was going on in the war.
