Question: Why do some scars leave the skin over time and some never go away?

I am curious about this question because I have several scars that I thought would never go away from a car accident, however all of them did. I have one scar though that never went away. I’m curious why certain ones are able to leave the skin and others are not. This connects to our topic in class about the layers of this skin. The epidermis and dermis, my first thought is that if it is a deeper cut that pierces through the dermis is when the scars may need longer time to heal or are never able to fully heal again.

A hypertrophic scar occurs within the boundaries of the wound. Keloid scars form into pervious regular tissue. It was also stated that keloid scars can be more prominent in other from birth, making scaring heal a little longer than other people. These differences explain why some scars are longer lasting as well.

If two parts of the wound are far away from each other, this will cause the wound to heal a lot longer. Stitches and staples are used on certain wounds as well to make the scarring process heal faster as well. Wounds that are cleaned out quick are able to heal faster as well. I found in my research that being in car accidents can increase your chance of a permanent scar because all of the dirt and bacteria can reopen the wound.

Overall, the main idea to why some scars go away and others don’t is how you take care and treat the wound. A scar in all actuality is unorganized collagen in the dermis layer of the skin, making it harder to heal. That is why if you clean, rub, and protect your scar and scab it should be able to heal a lot faster and quicker than other wounds. If the wound is not treated properly, causing the scab to dry out of get picked at it most likely lead to scarring. The most important thing to do is properly take care of scarring and to me that makes perfect sense why some of my scars have healing just
