The Awakening is a novel in which the majority of significant events are mental or psychological, and the author presents these changes and gives them a sense of energy and excitement even though they are not really exciting events or actions. Kate Chopin does a fantastic job at giving excitement to The Awakening even when the events are not very action packed. The book starts off with Edna Pontellier coming back from a trip bathing on the beach with a man named Robert, and once they approach Edna’s husband back at the house she asks for her wedding ring back from Mr. Pontellier. The act of someone leaving and it pulling at her heart allows the author to show that it is also a emotional awakening as suddenly Edna is longing for a man besides her husband and does not understand why. The author is using the excitement of Robert leaving to develop and explore the feelings of Edna and to give the reader a chance to fully understand the feelings of Edna for what they are, and expose her feelings for Robert even when the character does not understand what they mean yet. Chopin is giving the reader a sense of what might be to come, and provides suspense to the internal actions and feelings of Edna with the use of strange feelings for men and the desire to only talk about Robert. The author makes her feelings known to the reader, but does not explain the depth or give any clues to suggest that the character actually understands what she is feeling, and so this provides entertainment to the story as the reader wants to see what happens next and if she will learn and understand her true feelings. Chopin gives new excitement to the novel and makes the reader attach deeper into the novel as now there is a theme of a romance and mystery which grabs the attention of many readers and holds it fast to the plot. This is done through the use of the character’s thoughts and feelings being given to the reader by the narrator which makes the novel more interesting as the reader knows more than the
