The fear of living in poverty and being homeless is what motivates the majority of people to not only work, but it also motivates them to seek opportunities for advancement. When children are at risk for living in poverty the incentive to obtain and maintain stable employment is enhanced. Juvenilization of poverty, and public parenting can have a negative impact on both the child and the parent. Juvenilization of poverty is a rapidly growing trend in the United States. The definition of Juvenilization of poverty is, “ The greater likelihood that children, as compared to adults, will live in poverty.” (pg.151) With high rates of single parents and the condition of the economy; children are at risk of living in poverty. “Growing up poor has been linked to a variety of problems in children, such as dropping out of school, low academic achievement, teen pregnancy, and childbearing, poor mental and physical health, delinquent behavior, and unemployment in adolescence and early adulthood.”(pg.151) Children and parents can incur similar effects of poverty; such as mental strain and poor physical health. “ Later on, this lack of preparation puts them at risk of lower test scores, grade failure, disengagement from school, and higher dropout rates.” (pg.152) Children who are susceptible to growing up in poverty may contribute to a continuous cycle of living in poverty. However, there are some children who area able to interrupt the continuous cycle. “ The researchers also find that children who grow up in poverty are at greater risk of developing a behavior pattern known as “learned helplessness,” a condition in which children feel as if they have no power to change or control their circumstances.” Depending on the child learned helplessness can be the result of persistent exposure to
