At the age of 12 years old, Justin Bieber finished second in an obscure talent contest in his hometown. When Justin was 14, a talent manager found his cover songs on Youtube. Within a year of being found on Youtube, his first album was certified platinum in the United States. “His album My World matched that success, selling more than 137,000 copies within a week of hitting stores” (Justin Bieber. 3). A lot of celebrities don’t ever notice their fans, but Justin does. There’s many people that think Justin is a bad person and a bad singer. “Pencils of Promise helps build schools and create more opportunities for education. Justin donates a portion of his ticket sales to the charity” (Lindner 10). In 2013, Bieber helped build a school in Guatemala. “On Oct. 27, the 19-year-old traveled to a remote village in Guatemala with the organization Pencils of Promise, a charity he’s long supported that builds primary schools in developing countries like Nicaragua, Laos, Guatemala and Ghana” (Teling 1). Some might think that Bieber didn’t help build the school and he just raised money for it. “He didn’t just watch: He helped sift concrete, lay down cinder blocks, and spent time playing with the children who will one day attend the school” (Telling 1). Guatemala wasn’t a rich place so nobody really knew who Bieber was. The children didn’t know who Justin was so he actually got to be himself. While building the school, he actually began to have a strong bond with all of the children. In 2013, “Pencils of Promise raised $10 million since being founded in 2008” (Telling 2). One school usually costs about $25,000 to build, and Pencils of Promise has raised way more than that. “After deadly tornadoes swept over Oklahoma in July, Justin Bieber set aside a chunk of tickets for victims to go to his concert and have fun despite what happened” (Lindner 9).
