Essay # 2 Pocahontas If it wasn't for the Powhatan's people, the English settlers would have never survived their first few seasons in the New World. And clearly a lot of cultural differences in both groups were seen, Native Americans and Colonists had their own views on land ownership and the Powhatan's tribe believed- the land they were on was owned by no one.

Finally, in 1614, Powhatan made peace with the English men and His daughter Pocahontas, after being kidnapped and ransomed, she was married off to John Rolfe and taken to England. Unfortunately, she died of disease only three years later and Powhatan died in despair in 1618.

Given the dramatic difference in age, there was no real evidence of a romantic relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas. The only fictional evidence suggests John Smith and Pocahontas were nothing more than close friends for a couple of years.

In reality, Chief Powhatan wanted Pocahontas to marry the warrior Kocoum, even though Pocahontas is resistant. Kocoum was a real person who existed. Pocahontas married Kocoum in the year of 1610.
By 1613 Captain Samuel Argall held Pocahontas captive as ransom since relationships between the Powhatans and British took a down spiral. and Kocoum was either killed by Argall, or we simply assume he was just divorced from Pocahontas- which wouldn't have been surprising considering their culture and since Pocahontas married the British man John
