Influences on our personality The British naturalist and politician John Lubbock wrote, “Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it.” I disagree with the quote. I believe that our character is influenced beyond our control. The main influence on character is parents, another major influence is teachers and students, and co-workers and managers also have an impact on a person’s character. First of all, I believe a person’s character starts to form at a young age. Parents have the most influence on personality. The way a person speaks, and the grammar they use is influenced first by parents. At a young age, people tend to treat others the way their parents treat people. For example, when young, a child will treat people with respect like they see from their parents. Another influence a person may get from a parent is the way that they behave. If a child was to see an adult acting in inappropriate ways, the child will tend to act the same. Nextly, teachers and friends have an impact on one’s character. For example, teachers have influenced my character by teaching me that learning is fun. Teachers are in charge of teaching a person how to speak properly, use correct grammar, and also learn skills for the workforce and college. Friends also have a major influence on your character. Co-workers influence character by teaching a person life skills for the workforce. Often, the co-workers at a person’s job is elder than him or herself. A young person in the workforce may look up to their older co-worker for advice about how to work with customers, how to make the manager happy, or to guide the young worker. Managers also influence a person’s character. Most of the time a person may think their manager is there to fire them if they make a mistake,but in reality, managers are there to guide an employee through mistakes, and help them grow as a person and an
